Can anyone give a any information on where one can purchase a quality katana online? Are there any makers or brands that high quality and reputable? I'm looking to spend between $300 to $600. I am looking for a fully functional sword, not just a display piece. Any help would be appreciated. I don't even know where to start...

cheness, ryujin, hts, hanwei, huawei etc you can do a search for these on samurai sword shop website and just a general search will find a ton of sites for them

Just do some online research. There are some decent replica swords out there in that range.

Check out Kult of Athena (no, not a religion or such; just a name); you will find a wide range at the/or close to the best prices.

Thanks for the advice. After some research I'm leaning towards the Henwei Great Wave. Does anyone have any onsite into this sword?

I have no experience with the others listed so I can't make a comparison. The Hanwei "Great Wave" is a good sword, good cutter and good value for a sword in that price range. I have a set of all three, Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto.

The Katana MSRP is $960, yet can be purchased on e-bay for $584.82 including free shipping.

How sturdy is the sword? Could it cut wood without damaging the blade? Is it more for display, or fully functional?

The question is only one that a rank beginner would ask. So.....for the 1 millionth time......what do you want to do with your sword?

Cutting any wood is not the intended use for the blade design and will likely damage the blade, and possibly damage you in the process.

If you want to cut wood, Busse/Swamp Rat makes some blades that could loosely be called wakizashis in your price range; The AK47 and the Rucki will be the most easily available models.

From what I understand, they do not handle like a real wakizashi but can chop wood/split logs if that is what you want to do.

They do not look traditional either if that matters to you.

What Kohai999 said. If you like the Great Wave but want tougher, go with the Wind and Thunder. Check the specs and appearance on both and you will see why.

But. . .

I thought Katanas were of originally made from broken Spears to cut through Kevlar vests and and Castle Walls with their chisel ground tanto Hamons???

Ah the item you're looking for is called an "axe". :)

Had many a sword over the years, beat beater for the money for me was a Cheness in 5160, still own one, and yes it splits wood but that's a bit too abusive for most.

Hanwei makes some good blades, loved the lion dog but the axe handle tsuka wasn't for me.

Some companies on the Bay such as huawei make some pretty ones from T10 which aren't bad.

Once you have owned a few length preference will tell you what you will or won't like. Currently enjoying a bugei with a 14" tsuka.

That's AFTER they cut the machine gun barrels in half!;)

Lol'd.
