Quality knife companies that dont get much attention on the forums

I recently purchased a SOG Night Vision. Definately a quality knife. My friend Chris Christman recommended an Al Mar sere 2000. When I tried to do a search on these knives, there wasn't much info. That got me thinking. What other quality knives or knife companies don't get much attention on the forums? Why is this? Are Al Mar and Sog unpopular everywhere or just on the forums? Are the forums indicative of the knife buying public or are we that much different?

The amount of popularity a manufacturer receives in the forums is indicative of the sales volume they have in the market place. The more people buy a product, the more they talk about it. The funny thing is that some manufacturers get a bunch of talk, but their actual sales volume is quite low comparatively speaking. Microtech is an example of this. Others who sell more than most don't get talked about much at all. Gerber is an example of this.

What we see here is what is popular on the Internet. So who is the number one selling brand on the Internet? Well here is my educated top 10 list based on the sales at 1SKS and the sales of the dealers who bought from me while I was still wholesaling. The sales figures are based on $$$ and not units.

#1 Benchmade
#2 United Cutlery
#3 Columbia River Knife & Tool
#4 Spyderco
#5 Microtech
#6 Kershaw
#7 Emerson
#8 Buckl
#9 Cold Steel
#10 Leatherman

One that comes immediately to mind is the A.G. Russell branded stuff. Everything I've seen by A.G. has been extremely high quality - at least as high as any other production manufacturer. In addition, most of his stuff is a bit out of the ordinary, not the same-old stuff you see from the other makers. I get tired of all the black and grey stuff.

My vote for the most overlooked line in the industry is Junglee. These knives, imported from Japan by Gutmann are really well made and priced amazingly well for the quality built into them. I'm surprised they don't sell better than they do just judging on overall value. Some of them, like the Hattori Fighters and the Tak Fukuta hunters are simply fabulous. Most customers who buy a Junglee for the first time are amazed.

A line that is very popular and gets virtually no mention on this forum is the Boker line. It's a big seller.

Mike, our list would look somewhat different from yours. At the head of our list is Victorinox in both units and $$$$. The Swiss Army knife is till king. Is there a man who doesn't own one?

You wouldn't believe our second place line in dollars if I told you. I didn't believe it myself when I ran a query on the database. Obviously, the lines on your list would make any internet dealer's "best seller" list. Take care.

Mike You are pretty close in your assessment. You can add one more on to that, and Paragon is the name. The popularity of knives changes, because of the knife magazines. When Blade magazine named the Emerson Commander knife of the year, that is all you saw on the forums. Also the CQC7 was a big hit. A few variables cause knife popularity.

I wouldn't call Al Mar and SOG unpopular.

Al Mar is/was a very innovative and desirable maker. Unfortunately, ever since his untimely death a decade ago his company has eliminated about 90% of its product line. Today, they are probably best known for marketing an overpriced and clumsy cigar cutter

. Their older stuff was first rate always commands a premium on EBAY.

SOG is another Japanese manufactured premium trademark. They get alot of good press in the trade magazines and some of their stuff has won the "best production" award at Blade.
If they seem largely ignored on these forums it may be because we often see them marketed through the Smokey Mountain Knife Works.

SMK primarily retails the United and Frost cutlery brands. Both lines are targeted at novice (younger) knife collectors; and are generally considered low quality POS.

I have to disagree about Junglee. I am sure they have some well made stuff, but man what blatant design ripoffs!! Take a look at there knives and you will definitely see Katz, Benchmade, Spyderco.............

Most of my knives are handmade now, so I am not sure I know enough about al the companies. There are definitely some well cutting knives such as the Opiniels and some cheap puukkos that don't get mentioned, but just because they are efficient cutters doesn't mean they are any good. I mean, they have to have super duper duper duper stainless and G10 to be worth a crap, right?

I don't hear that much about Fallkniven, Hattori and Murray Carter's line, whatever the trade name is. I'm also surprised at how little talk there is about Boker and even Case.

Mike, I can address some of the disparity between activity in the marketplace ($ale$) and activity on the net, by brand.

The average Joe (Jane?) that buys a knife wouldn't know the difference between differential hardening and the differential in the car. 440C; 440 si' they couldn't care less. They care about the image of the piece in relationship to what they think they will do with the knife and who they think they are. They think about the looks, the price and that their friend had a ______ and thought it was great and their other friend had a __________ and it sucked. Forget about use, care, sharpening skills, etc., etc., etc.

We, on the forums, I would like to think are a different breed. We are INTO knives. We don't just care about differential hardening, we want to know how, who, where, at what temp, with what gas, how cooled, what steel, what color undershirt was the tech wearing when he did it, etc.

Chris Reeve, (deservedly), gets much play here. Put his knives in bubble pack on the pegboard at the local discount department store at full list and watch them collect dust. Put some $4.99 junk-a'port here and ask for comments and it will draw fire like a neon dartboard in a biker bar!

Hey, wait a minute ... neon dart board ... biker bar ... anyone know a patent attorney?

Bart, I think you have Junglee confused with Master Knives. Junglee has no knockoffs and the knives are made in Japan. Master Knives has very direct knockoffs of high end American designs and the knives are made in Taiwan. In these days where most tactical folders are beginning to look like one another, though, I can see where one might get this impression. Take care.
