I need a recommendation on a quality knife that can be used for everyday use. ie- cutting a lot of stuff.

I had a Kershaw Leek that was great to carry with the pocket clip, had a keychain, easy to use. Two things that pissed me off is that I would always keep it unlocked so it was quicker to open, but the lock would always move slightly over so the blade didn't open. It took longer to open the "Fast action" leek than any other knife. And recently the blade chipped towards the tip a couple millimeters down.

I don't cut anything metal, the toughest thing I've cut was a corrugated box from UPS and there were no staples in it.

So that turned me off to Kershaw. I'm thinking about CRKT.

Here are the requirements:
1.) Rugged
2.) Pocket clip
3.) Thin enough to be carried in my front pocket without being noticeable.
4.) Includes a keyhole to place a key ring on (opposite side of the clip so the key part is inside my pocket.
5.) When closed and in pocket, blade tip must be pointing down.
6.) Priced under $50 wholesale/dealer cost.

Please email me your recommendations at gte217e@bellsouth.net

Thanks a million.
Dave

without knowing the blade length laws in your area, I'd say the Spyderco Delica SS at 45usd, Cricket at 35usd/frn or 40usd/ss, or Pride at 35usd would all be good choices. Dealer of choice has (currently) 6usd shipping.

Heh actaully, post recommendation here, I'd like to see what else is good for an EDC other than a leek

Meets all of your criteria and comes with a 154CM blade that is much better steel than the Leek comes with.

I prefer tip-down carry.

Some people like tip-up mounted clips on tactical folders. They claim that drawing the knife is faster than with a tip-down configuration.
I personally don't notice any advantage in drawing speed comparing the two methods, but that's just me.

Tip-up carry is potentially dangerous - the blade might accidetnly open inside the pocket.

For further info regarding clip configuration, just use the BFC search feature. You'll get a truckload of results when searching for "tip-up tip-down".

Hope this helps.

I handled an M16 CRKT knife before and liked the smooth opening action. With a little experience, the carson flipper can be very fast. It has a feature that securely locks the blade thus converting it into a "fixed" blade style knife.

The clip on the knife allows for tip-down carry in your pocket. It has everything I'm looking for but I'm not sure if the AUS-8 steel is strong enough. The Leek has 420 steel.

Does anyone know about steel types and which ones are good and which ones to stay away from?

Also the only thing that is keeping me from purchasing the M16-10K combo tanto blade, black t6 handles and black coated blade is whether or not a keyring can be attached to the bottom of the handle in one of the holes.

If a keyring can be placed in the bottom hole without blocking the knife blade, then I found a winner, at least for me.

Any thoughts?

It's the M16-10K EDC. You can find out more info on the crkt website.
Price is more or less $40.

When I e-mailed you I was about to reccomend that knife, but I couldn't figure out whether or not it has a place for keys, so I didn't mention it. If you do buy that knife, get the AUS8 version. AUS6 isn't bad but 8 is worth the extra green.
CRKT Lightfoot M1 is a good knife as well, but the same problem exists, and it may be a little more expensive.

AUS-8 is a good steel for an EDC knife. It's pretty corrosion-resistant, easy to resharpen and still holds an edge pretty well.

You can't attach a key ring to a CRKT M16, but I'd still say go for it, it's a great series of folders. I'd recommend taking a spearpoint version instead of the tanto blade though.

I recommend the Camillus EDC as well. It's a great little knife that cuts like a bigger one, thanks to the slight recurve in the blade. The blade is 2.95" long, slim handle and tip down design. There is a lanyard hole on the end to attach a keychain too. 154CM steel is a great steel, too, IMHO. I'm pretty sure you can find them online for under $50.00. And an added bonus is that Camillus has excellent customer service if there is a problem with the knife at any point. Just call or email them, and they will take care of you.
