They seem to be pretty similar in configuration. For my occasional use I can justify the price of the Robin easier than the price of the Dragonfly, but I'm wondering if there is a big quality difference.

My idea would be to carry one of these in spyderedge in addition to my EDC PM2. I could use it if I had a task that was better suited to a serrated edge, and I could use it if someone wanted to borrow the knife and use it to cut something that I didn't want to cut with the PM2. (Or even if I wanted to cut something that I didn't want the PM2 subjected to.)

If you want it as a beater, go with the Byrd. They're cheap, and the fit and finish is just ok. No where near Spyderco. Don't get me wrong, it's well built, just not as refined as Spyderco. I think the biggest difference you'll notice is between 8cr13mov and VG-10. I personally would not get a Spyderedge in 8cr13mov. I could see the serrations dulling and bending quickly.

Byrds are a good value for the money, but Spyderco feels there's enough of a difference in quality that they only carry a one year warranty while even the "value line" Spydercos made in China using the same steel as the Byrds carry a limited lifetime warranty.

I picked up two the Byrd Robin's for father's day. One for my dad and one for my Father in law. I have to admit that my DragonFly2 is another level of quality. Before the question comes up, neither are into pocket knives so I'm trying to peak their interest. That's why I opted for Byrd.
