So no sooner do I receive my Dan's Whetstones translucent novaculite 8x2 than I find an 8x3 Norton's translucent Arkansas at Sharpening Supplies. Since I sharpen kitchen knives and started on waterstones, I do like the larger size .
I have read good things about the Norton Arkansas stones from the '70s, but does anybody have experience or know about their current supply? As we've seen with too many companies, things change and people will put their names on anything. I'd like a larger stone, but not of lower quality. Do they compare well with Dan's?

I've only used smaller translucent slip stones from Norton that are recent. They are just as good as any other translucent Ark I've used (old Pike, old Norton, Natural Whetstone, War Eagle, etc.) but I can't vouch for the more recent larger sizes, having never used one.

So, we both only have the smaller size stones. However, an example of Norton quality. A 2"X 8" stone is plenty but I know what your saying about the 3" X 8" stone. Because I have a nice Washita grade Arkansas stone in 4" X 8" and I really like working an ax on that size stone. It makes me wish I had a coarse / fine SiC stone in that size. Ha... DM
