Quality of Masters of Defense Knives?

I'll probably pick up a Dieter CQD Mark II when I save up the beans.

Why I am asking is somebody tore MOD to shreads on their bulletin board. He was talking about his falling apart.

From the pictures I've seen they look to be quality knives, why don't we hear more about them.

Just curious,
Clay

Its only my opinion, but my Mk1 CQD is a stirling bit of kit, no blade wobble and very well made. The only complaints I have is that the dual thumb studs spin around on a pivot and the 154cm edge came with a horrible angle of about 26-28. I have had to clean my Spyderco med grit stones three times now and I have used a course DMT stone and I am still not there yet! This 154CM is very tough stuff

It aught to hold an edge like the devil!

Got the Trident. Perfect in terms of QC, lock up, stability, etc. I love it.

Through the years I have owned and sold over a dozen of the MOD knives, I have only found one that any problems at all and that was a MINOR bit of blade play. I currently have a CQB II (already sold) that appears to have fantastic fit and finish. I beleive it to be an improvement in what already is great fit and finish. I live about an hour and a half from where these knives are manufactured and have dealt with Jim Ray for a few years before MOD came into being. I ALWAYS found Jim to be an upstanding guy who KNEW his knives. I can't imagine him putting anything on the market that is second rate!

I own the Trident and Tempest. IMO, they are extremely well made using knives.

With any manufactured product, a bad piece will slip through from time to time. When you look around on the forums, you'll get a better, overall point of view.

I only own one "MOD". A "LadyHawk". It's a really scary looking hawk-bill that thinks it's bigger than it is. Absolutely NO blade "wiggle". If they are all as fine as my LadyHawk, you have nothing to worry about in regards to quality.

I had a Trident for a little while. In my opinion it was a really good knife. I think one of the reasons we don't talk as much about them is they are so similar to MT (at least in appearance and price). When people are going to spend that much on a knife, people know that they will get great quality from MT (so why take the chance on a MOD which they don't hear much about). Also, if they decide they don't like the knife, MT has better resale value. Now, just speaking on the models that I have owned (which are the Trident, SOCOM, and LCC; I can't speak for the 2 CQD models) the MT is of better quality.

I have a MOD CQD and am very pleased.
Fit and finish are very good and there is zero blade play. I wish it had a little more snap when opening, but the blade is pretty heavy.
I work for a large machine shop and showed the knife to some of my friends here. Even though they are not knife knuts, each one commented on how well it was manufactured. These are guys who work with very close tolerances every day.
My next few autos will be Microtechs, but I will definitely buy more MODs in the future also. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

dont have any MOD folders but have 2 razorbacks, and while i love the knives, good finish, good design, the sheaths are cheap and cheesy, my camillus arclite has a better1. and they are difficult to sharpen, IMHO, and i have tried everything on them - EZ Lap, DMT, std ark stones, steels, etc and i have pretty good luck on most blades - but i am gonna get a sheath from blade tech and that will solve that anyway - have looked at the folders and they look like they are quality for sure IMHO......

My experience with MOD has been good and bad. My first was an Auto Trident. No problems, very well put together. I'd say it was about as cose to Microtech quality as I've seen in a knife from a different company. I had a Ladyhawk that was equally as nice. The Razorback I had was very nice. the tempest and the Hornet I had were not as nice though. Both had blade wobble and scratches on the handles. I was not impressed. The best thing to do is inspect the one you are going to buy. When you get a good one, it's really nice, but if yu get a bad one, it's a POS. Oh, I must add, the CQD I had was untouchable on quality. Just a bit big. I plan on getting a MKII very soon in the future.

My MOD Lady Hawk is top knotch. I carry it in my back pocket everyday. My only complaint about MOD and Microtech is that the handle finish will rub off if it comes across certain substances. A small amount of finish rubbed off of my Lady Hawk when I carried it in my pocket with a roll of Lifesavers. Since then, I carry it in my back pocket and no further finish has rubbed off.

What are Lifesavers?

'roll of Lifesavers'

Lifesavers are a hard candy about the size of a small to medium coin in diameter and are sold in rolls near cash registers.

They are packaged similar to breath mints and roll candy found in airports like the "Reeds" root beer candy my father always brought home from his travels.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

I have handled and carried both the Tempest and Razorback and found them very well designed knives with no problems at all...

I found the original Dieter CQD to be extremely well made, but overly large for a daily carry.
Recently I purchased a Stealth CQD II and you can see my pix and review of it here:
(the pix will show a size comparison between the Emerson Commander, MT LCC, and CQDII)

It's a great little knife and it has earned itself daily carry status with me.

BTW, I understand that the auto version will be out in a couple of months.

Ah! Thats what they are!

Steath model? Does than mean it has the black coating? Mine does (Mk1 half serrated, black teflon coating).

Or is it different in some other way?
