Hey guys, could anyone with experiences with the spyderco manix chime in and tell me if they're expectations were met by this knife? I'm currently carrying the kershaw avalanche and just recently the blade started chipping on me while cutting up cardboard boxes , so i'm now looking for a more durable EDC folder. I know the "manix" and "avalanche" uses the s30v steel, but because I put my knives through sometimes harsh use, should I be looking at a different kind of steel? I really appreciate any helpful inputs.

s30v is about as good as it gets. chipping while cutting up boxes??? maybe some warranty info should be explored.
as for the manix i abuse it at work regularly cutting through reinforced tubing and boxes as well. i think the blade on the manix is a bit thicker than that on the avalanche so that may help some. i have zero complaints with it and im looking into gettin a mini version.

If you type "Manix" in the search function, you will get about a million posts on it that you can review.

That being said, I can assure you just about all of them are raves. I don't think I ever saw anyone say anything negative about the Manix, unless it was that it was too big. If that's the case, the mini-Manix is available.

I have a mini-Manix which is plenty big and it's awesome.

Edited: If your S30V Avalanch was chipping from cutting cardboard boxes, you definitely had a defective blade. Cardboard should be no match for S30V.

After speaking with a kershaw rep about the blade chipping, they concluded, they would fix my blade under warranty. I've decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on the spyderco manix mini just because of it's reputation through rough conditions. Are there any reputable online stores you guys could refer me to? For some strange reason, the search function isn't working properly for me, it just pulls up a blank screen, anybody else have this issue? -Thanks

I have a S30V Native that totally destroys cardboard! It holds an edge noticeably longer than my 154CM Mini-Griptillian. It sounds like that Kershaw youo had either had a bad heat treatment, or the edge was ground too thin to hold up under everyday work.

A lot of mfgs. have had problems with S30V chipping. If you
search on this board and the web you'll find it chipping across
mfgs... Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw.... etc.

When camping or out the sticks messin' around my Manix is my go to folder. Nearly impossible to find a better combination of toughness and cutting ability in a folder for the money. Great ergos and edge holding to boot. Love mine :D

Im relatively new to the s30v world (about 4 months) and my knife hasnt chipped yet (and i do use it)

The manix is one tough knife and a darn good slicer i will tell you that the knife is fat though...... and by this i mean fromt he blade to the spine above the spyderhole. So expect it to take up alot of your pocket. This is my only real complaint about the knife. Like others have said do a search for the manix and you will find that it is a highly praised knife and deservedly so.

The Manix is a fixed blade that you can fold :D when opend it feals confident and inspiring. The blade is a ful flat ground that has a distal taper this means that thickness lessens from the base out towards the tip. It is is a big knife but acts like a surgical scalpel. IMHO the manix ergonomics are superior and give a excellent controle and a feel of sturdiness. The manix reeks of quality
and will outcut many competitors, just look at the test on British blades, where it outcut a sebenza and strider with ease.

Well guys, I just got back from the local gun and knife store, and played around with the mini manix. WOW, it's like holding a bottle of steriods, just the overall beefiness of the knife was enough to persuade me into getting one. I just ordered one over ebay for a steal, for $99.00, 90 bucks under what the local gun and knife store was selling it for. Anyways, I appreciate all the helpful input you guys provided me.

congrats you will be happy with this knife........ my initial thought was that you should have bought it at your local shop but not for $189..... my local shop has it in the 110-120 range and that i would pay just to help keep the doors of my shop open so i can handle the knives before i buy them

I remember reading posts cautioning against getting a full-size Rukus, Skirmish, or Manix for EDC. Too large in the hand, they said, too thick and heavy in the pocket. You will cry bitter tears and wish for a smaller slimmer lighter knife while the rough scales stab your tender thighs, that sort of a thing.

With the Manix anyway, I find none of that to be true. I haven't handled the other two. The Manix displaced my much beloved Endura as EDC. I carry it every day clipped in the front pocket of my cargo pants, and I honestly can't feel it there, just as was the case with the Endura. My work requires me to crawl around on my knees from time to time, but this too has brought no discomfort, at least not from the knife.

At this point, I don't see myself going back to a smaller knife for EDC. The Manix feels great in my hand, is totally unobtrusive to carry, and it has the deeply satisfying feel of a full-scale tool, no compromises, rather than a 2/3 scale lightweight replica.

Perhaps a small person who has to wear paper-thin slacks to work will find the Manix uncomfortable. I find it most excellent. Oh yeah, it cuts very well, but that goes without saying for a Spydie.
