I have a moderate collection of knives and have made a few fixed blades. I get my material from FineTurnageProductions, SteelMill, FireMarksDog & SnakeRiverKnives on Ebay and TexasKnifemakersSupply.com. I think I get good deals on Ebay.

I want to step up to gentleman folders and I have purchased a few kits from TexasKnifemakersSupply.com to start.

Q's:

Is the DDR-3, GPC100 & GX6 worthy of FineTurnageProduction mammoth material?

Are the tempered bead blasted blades capable of being a polished blade?

Dave,
You can polish the blades fairly easily and make yourself a nice knife. It's also a good way to learn some of the mechanics of folder making.

Check out the gallery section on knifekits.com and you can see what some people have been able to do, pretty cool stuff.

I have been to http://cgknives.blademakers.com before. The file work is especially inspiring.
As I am near Chicago, I plan to visit the Chicago Show September 9th.
It this show worth my time?
Yes! The Chicago Custom show is one of the best shows in the Country, it's all custom with a very good selection of makers especially folder makers.

We have a member here by the name of Coop that used to do a lot of those kits. From the results he got, I can say with certainty that those kits are worthy of Charles' mammoth ivory and tooth.

The knifekits.com are semi-mass produced but very nice indeed. They are nicer ground and better machined than some "custom" hand made knives I have encountered.

There is a guy named Dennis Greenbaum who has made some seriously awesome embellished kits on the knifekits.com pieces. Do a search. I think by learning how to work the kits he has graduated to making entire knives himself.

I think they are a great concept and real boon to aspiring knife-tinkerers.

Kudos to Darrel for bringing these to the market.

Not that I am any kind of knifemaking guru now or anything, but I started on these kits. Heres a DDR3 that has had pretty much everything modified. I'd do some things differently now, but it gives you a sense of how much can be changed and customized.
