Quality sports watch?

Well, I'm on my second Timex in as many months and this one is developing a big black spot in the middle of the case , so I'm in the market for a quality piece this time. Any suggestions? Right now I'm looking at the Oakley D1 and D2, or possibly something from Nike. I don't know watches too well so I don't want to spend money on nothing more than a name, which is what I'm afraid is the case with Oakley and Nike. I'd like to keep it under $150 if possible, and I don't need much more than a basic chronograph and lap timer for sport functions. I'm using this as a training aid for my runs, so I want it to be as light as possible. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Look at the G-Shocks and other Casio's, they have proven reliability and toughness. Go here for examples of their offerings with such things as lap counters. Under $150.00 to boot.

Thanks yam, I like that Runner model they have. Just what I'm looking for. Still, any other suggestions?

Another vote for Casio. I'm wearing an Edifice EDC for work. It has taken a real beating and is holding up great. Amazing for a $30 watch. I have a G-Shock G-200 that I wear hunting/fishing/hiking. They're not kidding when they say shock resistant.

Agree with the others about the inherent ability of a Casio (G-Shock in particular--although they are all tough) to take a beating. However, I see your looking for a running watch...Casio has several, although running is not their niche...have you also thought about Polar? Problem is that it is also comes witha H/R monitor...hard to think of "others" outside of Timex Ironman, Nike, etc.

Best of luck in your search--if you do find something new, let us know,

Yes, as others have suggested; Get yourself a Casio G-Shock. G-Shocks come in so many different models, with so many different features, that I never have to look any further than a G-Shock, to strap on my wrist.

Get a g-shock. A g-shock will serve you well. I wear one every day as a police officer. Mine has seen a lot abuse and has held up like a champ. I also use mine to time my runs.

I especially like the G-5600 tough solar. Lightweight, solar powered, many features.

Please let us know what you decide on and how it holds up.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the responses. Just a quick question, does anyone know of any slim G-shocks? I like them except for the size, I have skinny wrists and bulky watches annoy the hell out of me. That's why I like my current Timex, it's one of their 'sleek' models and doesn't get in the way. Thanks again.

I think the slimmest G-Shocks are the retro-style ones, like the G-5600, by a couple milimeters. You'd have to check, though, I haven't worn any other models in a while.

Sadly, I have to report the first signs of trouble with my Tough Solar. I've had it for a couple of years now, and just recently, I took it with me on an extended trip. It was packed inside my bag for a couple of weeks, and when I pulled it out, it was dead as a doornail. I immediately put it on the window sill and after a whole day in the sun, it only read medium charge. The watch seems to run down after a week or two out of the sun now. I've said this before, and it's coming true with this one too. The storage cells eventually wear out and won't take a charge. I wonder how much Casio will charge for a new storage cell, and I wonder if they still have them.

On the other hand, I have a battery powered DW-5600 that is still going strong and I have had it for nearly 5 years.

G-Shock all the way. I don't know if a better sports watch exists for the money. If you have a local Costco check them out as they frequently have great deals on harder to find models. Case in point, I bought my MTG there for around 40 dollars. A watch that normally retails for about 230 dollars.

For super tough the G-shock si a good watch, and if it gets smashed no loss.

The Seiko black monster is another excellent choice. Replace the band or bracelet with a Rhino strap and you have a great abuse taker.

Another vote for the G - Shock, I too went through the Timexes. I found the Humvee to be quite tough, and it has a lot of features, but it's a bit clunky for running. The G-Shock feels big at first, but I use it for running all the time and it's actually pretty comfortable. You might want to replace the rubber strap with a good cloth one like Timex puts on some of its athletic models though.
