Sambar is done as far as I understand. Maybe that has changed. Knuckleheads were shooting the sambar just for their antlers instead of collecting them after they shed them. The animal became seriously threatened with extinction. Their current status is "Vulnerable."
Interesting sambar stag trivia: "A stag also marks himself by spraying urine on his own face with a highly mobile penis." Ain't Nature a miracle?
The German stuff seemed to be mostly European red deer whose conservation status is "Least Concern."
