Flew down to Laredo, Texas this week.

Watched and took notes as Enrique Pena, one of the very top custom traditional folder makers in the world, hand crafted a Remington 1306 Lockback Folder.

Here's Enrique, for those who haven't met him, milling the lock into the CPM-154 blade.

This is the folder I watched him make.

Remington 1306 Lockback,

3 1/2 inch CPM 154 blade, hollow ground on a 20" wheel

bronze bearing

4 9/16ths inch overall

Hand-jigged brown bone handle

Milled 310 stainless integral bolster and liner.

Federal shield

Turned pins and flared thong hole

Paul Long Cape Buffalo hide sheath. Elegant clothes for an elegant folder.

So in addition to spending some quality time with a really great guy, and acquiring a fantastic new folder, ( even we makers can be rabid collectors) there may be some folding Bowies coming from J.White in the future.

Thanks, Enrique, for your hospitality, your beautiful folder, and especially for your superb instruction. I learned a lot, I hope.

John

P.S. look out for an upcoming Paul Long folder sheath...

Cheers Bruce

a knifemaker's knifemaker! The very best kind :)
that knife looks just about perfect to me.

He does exceptionally clean work, and this piece is a great example of that.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
Got to love it when knife makers also collect knives.

Lorien, that knife is just about perfect.

You ought to hear it "click" as the lock snaps into place, and the action is smooth as silk.

And it's mine, MINE!

John

Also, the hand-jigged brown bone has that natural warmth in the hand.

Here's Enrique jigging the handle.

It was so cool seeing him transform the smooth bone in just moments, by hand and eye.

Very beautiful. To learn from either of you would be a true pleasure and privilege. I always look forward to seeing new work by either of you. I hope to see some John White folding knives. Thanks for sharing.

Chris

Really fine work and a trip to remember! An education in your pocket. Sounds like the best mix of business and pleasure I've heard for a while. Bob L

I too own an Enrique and agree he is at the top in the world. Looking forward to the Paul Long sheath, sounds like I might need one. Gary

Color me green John! What a great trip that would be!!!

That beautiful folder you brought home is icing on the proverbial cake. :)

Hey, Guys. I sent Enrique's beauty of a folder to Paul Long, and he sent back this wonderful Cape Buffalo belt sheath to fit it.

I like to wear a large folder on my belt at times, and this is an elegant addition to a dress occasion.

Enrique and Paul make a great combination here, in my opinion!

John

Love the knife.

One of the things that draws me to Pena's knives is his jigging. For some reason, the depth and patterns he does just seem "correct" or "right".

I don't know what it is, and I can't say why my eye likes it so much.

Awesome John! Glad your interest in folders is growing, both in collecting and especially in making :)
