does anyone know a good brand name or place to recommend buying a wood burning tool.. i dont know if im calling it the proper name, ( like a soldering iron but with lots of different tips ) i saw some at harbor frieght but i wanted something well made ( american made would be even better but will go with whatever people can vouch for ) i was hoping to find alotta different tip shapes.

i would like to start making my own designs in like axe and hatchet handles, eventually tomahawks, i figured i would practice on shovel handles and the like, but i would also like to use it to make designs on other flat wood projects that im trying to get my daughter interested in

money is not so much of a worry because i will save up alil more for it if need be ( i mean i dunno what the really good kits go for but i figured they cant be more than a couple hundred for like a professional one, right? )

i dunno... i need help you guys im lost lol

thank you

ETA: not that american is the only place that makes good products... some of our products are crap... but i didnt really wanna buy another cheap chinese tool, i want something that will last.

Hey good luck, I wouldn't mind having a nice set myself.

Just FYI though, the cheap ones work alright too. I bought a solder/wood burning tool with like 6 different tips at a local hobbie store for like $10. Cheap as heck but I used it to burn this design in the handle of my Bowie and Hawk....

I would like to try a more expensive set up to see if it really works better, but for now I'm happy with the cheap stuff. :)

It's been a VERY long time since I even saw it, but I think Tandy Leather used to sell such a tool (also can be used on leather).

I'd bet a conventional soldering iron could also be used (in fact, I'm sure of it). Lots of choices there (and quality too), and many tip options. Can also be had in a wide range of wattages, including models with adjustable temperature output. All the better for wood, leather, etc., as the heat output can be matched to the job.

I do wood burning in my free time and I do some very detail work just using the cheap one you can buy at Walmart for like $20. I'm not sure how to insert a picture on here from my phone but if you go to Facebook and search for my profile I have an album of some of my work and you might be surprised how well just the cheap wood burning kit can be. Search fro Bill Adailan and you should find it. Check it out

Okay, look at the Chippingaway "cub" kits, Razortip industries and Nibsburner.

The art is called Pyrography, and there is a magazine of the same name.

There are probably a ton of different brands to choose from if you search with pyrography. ;)

Good luck, and let us know what you get!
