Queen Burke collaborations

Hello folks,

There seem to be quite a number of threads on the Case/Bose collaborations and for good reason; they are excellent knives. Lately, I have been wondering about the Queen/Burke collaborations. There seem to have been fewer threads on these models, so I'm wondering what people seem to think of them. I am particularly interested in the English Gentleman model, which looks like a real beauty.

I am particularly interested to see how it compares to the Doctor's model, which seems quite similar. They are both roughly the same pattern and blade configuration but the Doctor seems much cheaper than the Gentleman. I would love to know how the two compare and any differences that don't show up in the small stock photos I have seen of the two. If any one has any thoughts or comments about either of these, I would love to hear them.

Also, if anyone knows a good source for an English Gentleman model at a fair price, please PT or email me. I'd really appreciate it.

I own both the gentleman and Dr pattern.

Both are well made knives with the gentleman taking the edge in fit and finish. They are not quite as well made as the Case/Bose, but they can hold their own. The best part about them is the blade steel. BG-42 makes for a nice stainless that will hold an edge.

It is going to be hard to find the gentleman model on the cheap. They were pretty pricey when they came out. I think you are seeing the biggest difference between the two because of the carved MOP on the gents model while the Dr. pattern is smooth MOP. Both have a lot of reeding type file work on the liners all the way around.

Thanks for your reply Bastid, I have another question for you though: does the Doctor have a drawn spring the way the Gentleman does? I'm very curious to know as I cannot find a clear picture of the Doctor that shows me one way or the other...

I have an earlier Queen/Dan Burke knife, the Rancher. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the fit and finish when I received the knife, it wasn't on par with Schatt & Morgan much less equal to the Case/Bose collaborations. The biggest issue is the way the blade is ground, it is not even and came from the factory favoring one side. From what I can tell Queen simply took the same blades they had from the Queen/Dan Burke Cattle King and made it into single blade knife. I expected more thought and effort put into a factory-custom.

I kept the knife though because of the blade, nearly 4" of BG-42 goodness. Putting aside the small F&F issues, this flat-ground clip point is a hell of a knife. I'm going to convert it to a full convex one of these days.

What is a "drawn spring" ?
roland

I could be wrong, but I thought it referred to a spring that fills the gap between the tip of a blade and the tail end of knife. Sort of like how the English Gentleman knife here does with the smaller blade. I'm not 100% sure though and I defer to other more knowledgeable folks here.

O.K. i have seen "wrap around spring" used for what you are describing. "drawn" is an easier term to use if correct.

I can not get to my safe right now it is going to be a few more weeks, but if memory serves me right it does have a "spring extension", but I could be wrong. I know the gents knife does since I carry it on occasions and is in my edc shelf. :D
