Queen Canoe vs Gunstock

I'm looking at buying my first Queen, and cant decide between the Gunstock or the canoe. My main edc right now is a case sodbuster jr in cv, and im looking for something similar in size and sturdiness. Which pattern would you suggest?

Thanks

Two great patterns (two of my favorites in fact) that make for a tough choice.

Let me just offer that the rounder edges of the Canoe are said by some to be a little more pocket friendly compared to the fairly square shape of the Gunstock, but it's not something that ever bothered me, in fact, my son got the Canoe while I still have the Gunstock.

Having said that, I can't help you much, I like both too much to choose.

Flip a coin.

Or get both...

Either way, you've picked a fantastic knife.

I have a Queen Canoe in D2 and I love it. It stays sharp long time. It is not a good finger nail cleaner because the pen blade is quite the fatty. I carried it today, and it performed like a champ, like usual. It is hard to feel in your pocket. It even fits into that small coin pocket of your jeans. I do not have a gun stock yet.

Canoes never visually appealed to me, then I got a Queen in D2 and I was really taken in with this pattern! Its thin/flat cross section just disappears in your pocket but still feels great in your hand because of its width. In fact I ended up with 3 more Queen SfOs in the canoe pattern before the kick eased up a bit:eek:

The Canoe has a slightly shorter blade but much stouter than the Gunstock.
The blade is the width of the single spring
And the small pen blade is thinner than the Gunstock due to the differential grind.
The Canoe feels a much sturdier knife for heavy work

The Gunstock is lighter and slightly smaller and because of the 'Gunstock" it is thinner to hold.
It has a wide clip blade that is very useable

If you want a jack with a clip blade, then the Gunstock
If you want a single spring with a stout spear blade then the Canoe.

Either is the correct choice!!

Same thing happened to me. I was never crazy about the canoe pattern, but this queen has one of the best f/f out of all my knives.

I think the question is, is thinness (Width from scale to scale) more important than a little wider knife. Also, as has been mentioned, the Jack's main blade might be a little longer than the Canoe's, but the Canoe's blades are beefier (Spine to edge), & do you want to open your blades from 1 side, or have opposing blades.

If your last EDC/EDU was a Sodbuster, I'd suggest getting the Canoe. You'll get another blade & have about the same thickness (Width of handles) as the Soddie, so it'll carry similar (Maybe even better because of the raised bolsters to protect the tangs).

Of course, I'm surprised no one has YET to say, get both. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Both great patterns. Gunstock is a little "stocky" for me, i.e. thick for its length. I'm in my single spring/double blade faze this year and would definitely go for the canoe. I've handled it and it feels goooood!

I love the single backspring design, and resulting slim carry profile, of the Queen Canoe.
Just one of many aspects that make is a terrific pocketknife.
Full flat grind blades of D2, rounded bolsters, and a great size - 3-5/8" closed.

(BTW, Queen's Muskrat also uses the single backspring design.)

I like the Canoe. very flat and "pocketable" due to the single spring. I have had other canoes, but didn't like them because the open main blade was not straight with the handle. The Queen is.

It's a nice using size, too, but if you need a sharper finer point, then it may not be for you.

Queen Muskrat is on my short list. They make 2 versions, one with the same clip blades and one with a long spey.

Cozy Glen Canoe. Just use it tonight to cut up a box. Recycle day tomorrow.

wow, thanks for the great responses and opinions, im leaning toward the canoe i think. would anyone mind posting a picture of the canoe next to a sodbuster jr for comparison, i would really appreciate it.

I had the Queen Gunstock for awhile. It was stout and beautiful, but the square bolsters had sharp corners that were hell on my pockets. It got swapped because I wasn't carrying it. The canoe wouldn't cause that problem, I bet.

Canoes are great. They fit my hand really well. Love the single springs on the Queens.
