I purchasd this knife a couple months ago because I want my collection to represent many different patterns. I had noticed that once I liked a pattern, I was guilty of getting more of that pattern (like the trapper). But, since I wanted diversity in my collection, this Doc knife was a good specimen to add. Anyhow, it gets me to thinking... Patterns would come out to specifically fill a job, in this case to be handy for a Doctor. I wonder if back in the day these knives really got used much by Doctors?

Back in the day, many so called Doctors, were likely actually Quacks... I doubt they would have concerned thmselves, even if it had been available, lol! I contacted the person that worked with Queen on this Queen Classic knife, and which is the exclusive dealer for the series... He told me 440c stainless on this knife :-)

I wondered the same thing. If that second blade was used as a tongue depressor, how would it be sanitized.........

PKJ, my new traditional is on the way via USPS. Small Case texas toothpick with two damascus blades. Sorry to go off topic. I'm excited.

All kidding aside, They probably did get used by the docs. I believe the butt end was used as a pill crusher. I have one of these made by Frost Family. It's a sleek design that fits great in the hand. A nice pattern to collect.
Let hope that the doc who owned one never mistakenly used the wrong blade as a tongue depressor!

Nice knife, I've never heard of the 2nd blade as a tongue depressor, the flat bolster on a doctors knife was used to crush the pill. the spatula blade was used to portion out pills, mix remedies and administer the crushed pills or dry remedy, and mix and apply salves. I think it would make a nice pipe knife.

When I was a kid a longgg time ago I worked at a drug store as a delivery boy. The old Pharmacist had and used a Doctors knife with a very flexible spatula that he made creams and ointments with and also counted pills. He had been in business since the early soda fountain days. Years later he closed down and I was able to buy all the old counters and soda fountains, but sadly not the knife ;-))

Best regards

Robin

I've got that same knife. Marked Amherst Cutlery. Nice knife with excellent F&F. I think it was from a giveaway.

That makes much more sense - I was kidding (kind of) about the tongue depressor - just the first thing that came to my mind. Thanks for setting me straight!

Peanut Butter spreader - I like it!

Yes, he did give them away. Kind of a sad tale really. I think he gave away 10. Great knife, I heard it's 440c and sharpens like it.

i have a yellow rough rider doctors knife.

its a nice pattern but my particular specimen doesnt 'snap' with much authority and the blade rubs the liner just a little. not enough to dull the edge.
its a neat little knife, very slim. would like more blade and handle for day-long yard/garden work but its excellent as a 'walking around' knife.

Yes! As Pete said this pattern was developed for use by Dr.s. The flat bolster was used for crushing pills and back in the day doctors used a lot more salves than today. The spatula blade was for mixing the drugs into the salve. And for counting pills out of a larger container. I suppose the long thin blade would serve the counting purpose also.

This particular Doc specimen that I have, is one made by Queen after the Daniels buying of the Queen company. One thing it has, that I hope will become standard for Queen, and hope some other firms will follow, is it having a pinned in shield (rather than glued in place) :-)

Here's a pair of vintage dental pliers I picked up a while back!
