Hey that rythmes..
Anyway, I just bought a new Queen steel canoe in D2 with jigged black cherry scales.
Here's my opinions:

-Handle- The jigging is a little rough but the scales look pretty good overall. I like the bolsters (nickel silver, I presume) and they have already taken a nice pocket luster. The backspring is VERY stout and it almost takes effort to open the main/secondary blades. I like that in a slip joint:) After you get the blade open, the knife has excellent "walk and talk".

-Blades- Both blades are made of the ever-so-tough D2. The knife was pretty dull OOB, but with about 40 min on a stone and another 10 with my 204, the blades are extremely sharp. I find that with some effort, D2 takes a very keen edge very similar to 1095, etc. Another thing to note is that after thinning the edge, the Sharpmaker works wonders.

-Overall- I feel that this knife will be getting ALOT of pocket time especially with pant season coming up. Although it is a stout, work knife, it carries pretty well.

Good to hear it, I have bone/stag version on it's way from Smokey Mtn. :)

Matt...been collecting information on Queen's D2 slip joints and want to thank you for your contribution!

Not a problem fellas! Even though I've only had her for about 4-5 days, she's been a real pleasure to own. The only thing is that I've noticed that I've already chipped the edge while scraping a sticker off of my license plate. After another 20 min. on the stone I was able to fix the problem.

Thanks Jazzman, I hope it brings many years of enjoyment.

I ahve a cocobolo D2 canoe, it is a very stout little knife. The wide blade is good for some tasks, but a disadvantage when you need to twist the knife around (cutting patterns in cardboard).

They NIB edge quality on mine was very low. I started to reprofile on a Spyderco 204. Took far too long. So I switched to a belt sander with an 80 grit belt, then 120 though 600 grit. Took 5 minutes.

The edge holding is great, and I find the D2 steel to be at least as stain resistant as 154CM.

Queeens really nailed the heat treat, it is almost on the Dozier level.

Hi Mike,

Wondering about re-profiling with a belt sander. Isn't it kind of aggressive?
I am thinking one slip and you would have a gouge in the edge!

Haven't tried this method yet and would appreciate a little more detail on the actual process.

Don

I used a DMT caurse hone to reprofile the edges on my D2 stockman. It went pretty fast. I've carried the stockman for almost a year now and no chipping. I put a 13 degree edge on it. Great edge holding with it too, I really like it.

Well I've had the Bone/Stag Canoe for a couple of days.
It arrived *gritty*
The smaller blade wouldn't snap shut.
The larger blade limped.

I opened the package when I arrived from work. The next morning I was filling out the return form when my wife asked why I was sending it back. I proceeded to demonstrate and the Canoe healed itself. Snap to both blades!

After dousing it with brake cleaner and some silicon grease it got a good deal better.

Last was a session on the mousepad.

I really like this knife!
We have made friends.

Does anyone know when the Canoe pattern was introduced/first popular?
If you look at the nonlogo side, doesn't it look like an 'Art Deco" Design?

Hi Don,

re: Re-profiling w/belt sander

I also got tired of using the coarse diamond stone. I now use a cheap 1" x 30" with a 200 belt and use the slack section above the platen. I just freehand, edge down. I'm not too concerned about the angle as this is just to thin out the secondary(?) bevel. Once you get it to a thinness you like then go to the sharpmaker or what have you and be more careful.

Using the slack section and 200 grit makes things happen slowly so you don't have to worry TOO much about gouging...

Of course, be careful, knives are sharp, don't scratch the blade, yada, yada...

regards,
tom

Thanks, Tom...just happen to have an old 1x30 out in the workshop that's been sitting around collectin' dust...gonna get some 200 and give it a try on a couple of beaters and see how I do :)

Smokinbasser-

I don't know if you will see Queens in the SMKW catalog, but I do know that they have them at the showroom. I have looked at them there a couple of times.

As I sit reading this thread I have a Queen canoe cocobolo D2 in my pocket. It is a burly pocket knife. Like many, mine came with a blunt edge and grit in the pivot. After cleaning and reprofiling, it shaped up nice, and has great walk and talk, and a very sharp edge.

Thanks for clearing that up, I usually look through smkw catalogs closer than a Cincinnati prosecuter looks at a Hustler mag and didn't remember seeing any queens offered in them and from your location I see you are rather close to them . wish it wasn't such a long drive down there cause its probably the closest dealer around

SmokinBasser;

Have you ever tried the Cecil Clark Cutlery Company on Monmouth Street in Newport KY? They have always stocked the complete Queen line but I don't know if they have a retail storefront anymore. I have bought from them via mail for years. One of their previous owners (now deceased) actually was instrumental in developing the original Schatt line with Qeen in 1991.

Let me know what you find out.

Knifeaholic; wow thank you for the heads up on them their phone number is 859 291 2541 the address is 1038 monmouth st. Newport Ky. I will be calling then going down in the morning assuming the good lords willing and the creeks don't rise. Thanks so very much I had never even heard of them before your post. :D :D :D

My Queen Canoe came from SMKW.
I found them on the website. They don't carry the full line up, more like a couple patterns of each for each handle variety.

Knifaholic Cecil Clark cutlery is still going strong, their address has changed though, the new one is 833 monmouth they just moved a little closer to the river and carry Queen Case Cold Steel Schrade Kershaw Spyderco and several other lines as well. Its kind of embarrasing for a knife collector to find out about an established knife store in your back yard from a post on the internet but better there than never knowing! thanks for the heads up :D Visited them they have great selection they also carry CRKT ,Hen&Rooster, Buck, and oh yeah Shatt and Morgan. They have the play knives from Gil Hibben and a good selection of sword repros too.
