Does anyone have first hand experience with either the Queen Dogleg or Serpentine Jack? I'm interested primarily in their closed lengths, various retail sites give conflicts data...

thanks,

Jon

The catalog I got from Queen lists the serpentine at 2 1/2" and the dogleg at 2 3/8".

Yes, I've seen those numbers on a few sites. Knifecenter.com lists them as being considerably larger (at least an inch longer closed). Eyeballing the ratio of nail-nick to blade and tang I'd have to say Knifecenter is right.

I'd really like to order one of these two jacks but not if they're smaller than a typical peanut pattern!!!

Does the catalog show all of the cocobolo (or bone stag) series in a single picture?

Jon

2 1/2" is smaller than most pen knives and peanuts. i would think that is a typo. I have no experience with either of these knives though, so what do I know:)

The catalog does show all the cocobolo series in one picture, but the knives are each cut-and-paste with slightly different view angles. The dogleg and serpentine jacks appear to be about the same size as the small stockman, which I know is 3.25", but the relative sizes of others on the page are not shown accurately. Try calling Knifecenter or Kim at Empire Knives to get an actual appraisal of a real knife.

The lengths in the catalog must be typos. I'll call knifecenter to verify.

I really like that dogleg jack...

Stone dog, You're right the first issue of the catalog had a lot
of typos. Remember these are "pattern" knives which means
that within that "pattern" the size will be the same from one
brand to the other.

Hope that help, mate. :D

Tightwad, I know they're pattern knives but I've never seen another brand offer either a dogleg or a serpentine jack. It looks like the serpentine jack (at 3 1/4") uses the same main blade, liners, etc as Queen's small serpentine stockman (which is of course also 3 1/4").

As for the Dogleg Jack. It can say with absolute certainty that they are 3 3/8" closed. :) Mine came Friday afternoon. I ordered the cocobolo version from Knifecenter.com. I'm really, really impressed (I was leary after a bad experience with a S&M English Jack which I know is made by the same factory). The blades sit perfectly, the springs are very strong and the grinds are excellent for a sub $50 knife. It is now my official EDC. While I haven't done any edge holding tests (and probably won't) I will say that it took a looong time to put a new edge on each blade. Interestingly enough I didn't get much of a "wire" like I do on softer stainless and most of my carbon steel knives.

I'm hooked on Queen's D2 line now. :D
