Queen Dogleg Jack the good and the bad

Hey guys,

I just got my Queen BEM Dogleg jack in the mail today. I was really excited. The Dogleg jack is a really nice pattern. The scales on the knife were very striking. The grind on the blades were nearly perfect. Drawn swedges on both blades. I really enjoyed it.

However, there is a down side. When I was cf-ing the knife. The spring on the main blade does not sit flush when the blade is open. In fact, it sticks out about a half a finger nail's thickness, half of 1 mm. I can really feel it and see it clearly. When I was looking at it, the shield fell out. I was really surprised. This has never happened to any of my other slipjoints. Even my Old Timers didn't have this.

I mean I could glue the shield back. Is there anything I can do to fix the spring that is sticking out? I bought this knife new for 50 some bux. Is this typical of Queen? What would you do? Suck it up, ask for an exchange or ask for a refund?

God Bless

If it was me I'd either return it to the dealer I bought it from or send it to Queen for a replacement. :grumpy:

Not typical at all
I know it is a hassle but send it back

Speak to your seller first
They should replace it for you
if not (think about if you want to use them again!)
And
Send it back to Queen

Diane is very pleasant to answer questions.

I would call the dealer and have it replaced, not fixed. I would expect better quality. If the dealer does not do it, then I would contact Queen directly.

Do what Knowtracks said. I've never heard of a shield falling out! Sometimes I wonder if folks at these knife stores abuse or drop knives, screw them up and send them out anyway. I have a hard time seeing how Queen's QC could let that one go out!

I was really surprised. I bought this knife brand new. There are not dings on it, so it wasn't dropped. But the shield dropping out of a brand new knife along with a bad fit is the first time for me.

I've had the a Case shield fall out of a small toothpick before. I have a dog leg in Cocobolo and the F&F is very good. The BEM models seem plentiful, I'd return it.

Really? From what I've read it's a pretty common occurrence. I have a beautiful Boker stockman with washboard bone handles and its shield fell off within a week. Luckily I was at home when that happened so I was able to find it and superglue it back. That little incident led me to looking for knives with pinned shield.

Yeah, I've seen lots of shields fall out also. Queen, Case, Boker, etc. Keep in mind, these were all glued-in shields, not pinned. Lots of the older guys I know who carry a pocketknife are missing their shields.

I talked to the deal. Apparently, the knife that I got was the last one that they had left. I really like the knife.
I can deal with the shields, not an issue.
Can I do anything about the spring not laying flush against the handle? Like filing something down?

it doesnt sound that bad but picts would help, i have a trapper that the springs sit a little proud but it doesnt effect the usability... but your knife your dollar and if its bothering you then it needs fixed:)
dunno you might ask in maintenance and tinkering forum

Queen should be willing to fix it for you (for free) if the dealer can't give you a replacement. If you mess with it yourself first, all bets are off.

Hey guys,

Thanks y'all for all the advice. I talked to the dealer, Bill at Cumberland. He was a really nice stand up guy. He offered to do whatever it took to make it right.
With this economy, I really didn't want anyone to take a hit so I fiddled with a file and a diamond hone. I ground where the blade met the spring a bit. Now the spring is flush with the handle, open and closed. I am really happy that my plan worked.

As for the shield, I think I am going to put a MOP inlay into it. I am really glad that everything worked out right.

God Bless

Kid, If the spring is the same in open position as in closed. You just file liners down a little with about 400 grit wet or dry sand paper...

If the backspring is low in open position, and flush with liners when blade is closed that's Little different story and the tang has to be filed, to where its the same height in all positions. I don't know if your knife has half stop or not?

It might be only one your dealer has but not the only one you can buy, either send it to Queen to have replaced or fixed, or ask dealer to refund you money. You'll be out shipping I'm almost sure? YMMV........

No offence; just thinking out loud a little. It's just something I've never come across. If I remember right most or all of Queen Cutlery made knives have pinned in shields.

I wish I had known that before hand and then I wouldn't have put my little foot in my big mouth:eek:! Bill is a friend of mine and a great guy!!

Not all. I've a carved stag bone toothpick where the shield went for a trip one day. Fell off in my pocket, went through the wash, and I kept hearing "ping... ping... ping..." in the dryer.

A little superglue epoxy has held it steady since.

I go by a guy's actions. Bill is good is my book. I am really glad that everything worked out right.

As for the shield, the BEM knife was super glued. If Queen had epoxied the shield on, it would never have felled off. I am thinking about ditching the Queen shield and putting in a MOP inlay.

God Bless
