i recently received 7 knives from Bill at Cumberland (very friendly and helpful).
of the 5 Queens, one, mini folding hunter arrived not sharpened at all. under 10x magnification the polished metal went right to the edge, no grind marks at all. the others are reasonably sharp but using my edgepro, the angles are all greater than 24 degrees per side. there is about 1 mm. of untouched metal at the blade edge at 24 degrees. otherwise fit and finish on all is fine.
the Moore Maker (serpentine stock) is a very sweet knife, the kind you don't want to put down once in hand. it's grind is even steeper (40 degrees ? per side).
the Canal Street (ring opener) is also a tightly made little knife. sharp and at 24 degrees per side and the only one with edge angles nearly equal on both sides.
so, other than edges, all are well made without problems. the MM is the most expensive, but i think worth it, especially if you don't want stainless.
question: so now i have 15 blades to work on with my edgepro, what angle do folks recommend for the D2 blades, and for the 1095 ?

What do you want to use them for?

Now that is THE question isn't it.

But for overall blade use I sharpen D2 & ATS-34 at a steeper angle that 1095 carbon steel. D2 & ATS I have found to be much harder & more brittle that good `ol carbon, and chips much easier. On my Lansky I sharpen D2 & ATS at 25 degrees. For carbon steel (depending on blade thickness) I sharpen at 15 or 20 degrees.

But that's just me.

For the D2? Develop plenty of patience. :) I'm not a big fan of that steel. If it arrives sharp with good angles, it's fine. If I have to grind new angles on it, I'm not really interested. Life's too short to keep correcting Queen's mistakes, and I don't have the money for more expensive examples. That said, I do have one Queen D2 knife that came sharp, but it's a fixed blade.

I also find D2 chips at sharper angles. I use 20 per side when I have to do it.

I've actually gone back to using 20 per side on most knives. When I put different angles on different knives I have to remember which is which, and that's not always easy. I just want to grab a stone (or a Sharpmaker) and go to town.
