Been looking at the Queen / Schatt & Morgan Mountain Man folders. What would you get 1095 or D2 steele and why? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have no experience with the d2 but it is hard to believe that the one I have in 1095 could be improved. Chris

One of my favorites, I have several in both 1095 and D2.

Both are good, D2 is somewhat harder to sharpen, but holds the edge longer. The 1095 takes a WICKED edge! If you want more rust resistance go with the D2, but as runningboar said, the 1095 is great also.

Me personally I prefer the D2 ones by a slight margin.

I have the Queen Mountain Man in D2 - where else can you get such a well-made pocketknife with a tool-steel blade at such a reasonable price?

Still, can't argue with getting it in 1095 - but like the Last Confederate said, I prefer the edge-holding superiority of D2.

You're not going to go wrong either way - or be smart and get them both! :D

Had a MM in 1095. True it does dull faster, but makes up for it IMO with ease of sharpening and the scalpel like edge it takes. I'm pretty sure either would serve you well.

I have one in D2, so that should tell you what I prefer. There is a simple trade off in properties:

D2 - better edgeholding and corrosion resistance
1095 - easier to sharpen, probably a little tougher

You just have to decide which set of properties is more important to you.

Why not the ats34 or the 420? Just wondering.

Honestly
I have only seen the ats 34 offered in the top of the line Schatt & Morgan and they are a little to pricey for me, the 420 I haven't seen. All of my shopping has been done on line and I haven't actually seen any of these knives first hand. Just pictures on this forum but they do look Soooo Nice and now I just gots to HAVE one. I spend more $ because of what I read and see here. Thanks Guys

Does any one have a good link/site to pick one of these up? Not too much luck when I googled. Are they still in production? Really like the look of this knife in 1095...

There is one available with birdseye maple scales on epray.

Other cheap but good pocket knives:
Kissing Crane Sodbuster -- *** this one needs a little love on arrival
Opinel
Douk Douk -- maybe the best edge I've ever gotten on a knife
SAK's

The Crimson & Rootbeer Bone and the Sambar Stag ones are only available through Bill Horn at

They were special factory orders for him.

Queen is also making a 1095 jigged or smooth yellow bone and a real Stag Mountain Man under contract for Moore Maker, a bit pricey though. This Ebay sellar has them and has a stellar reputation.

Borrowed from the Ontario RAT site:
"It depends on your main use for the knife. D2 will not stain as fast as 1095 and it will stay sharp longer, but it is also harder to re-sharpen.

1095 will be easier to sharpen but stain quicker.

Also note that D2 will not take as much lateral stress as 1095 steel.

So, if you're looking for a knife that requires less maintenance then choose the D2, if you just need a tough knife for utility type work then choose the 1095 version. "

Hope this helps..

As for which I prefer, in this blade length I give the slight nod to D2. As for where to purchase anything along these lines, Bill at Cumberland Knife Works is a great guy to deal with, and has incredible prices. While you are there, check out the premium hunters in D2 for $39.00 each.
