I'm wondering if anyone can share their opinion of this knife with regard to quality and the steel used which I think is 1095 (carbon) Thanks

They are available with D2, 1095, and some in 420 stainless. S&M made a File & Wire version with ATS-34.

I have one in D2 and ATS-34. The ATS-34 is a safe queen (no pun intended).

I've been happy with Queen's D2. I think the heat treat leaves it below rc 60, and that's not optimal, but its still pretty wear resistant and the edge lasts a long time for me at least.

I have numerous knives in 1095, but no Queens in that steel, so I can't comment on that.

Some of the Queens I've bought have had issues, and have sent some back, but overall you get a big bang for your dollar from them.

Bill Horn of www.cumberlandknifeworks.com is great to deal with. If one has a problem, he'll replace it.

I have a Queen in D2, and it is a PITA to work. The edge was very obtuse, so I reprofiled the edge. The blade itself was still too thick for me, so I sent it to Mike from BRK&T to convex it for me. He mentioned while on the phone he had a Queen in his pocket as we spoke. D2 is a very tough steel and once you get it like you want it, it will amaze you how long the edge stays sharp. The F&F has been fairly good on the Queens I have seen.

I would get one.

Best of luck,
John

They are one of, if not my favorite folders,

some have shown up with blade play, but usually Queen is good about fixing the few that do.

The new Amber Carved Stag Bone ones are REALLY nice!

I did the same with a couple of D2 Queens! Mike's treatment leaves them very nice indeed!

I have a Moore Maker trapper in 1095 that Queen made, and I've been very pleased with that as well. With 1095, it's no problem to put your own edge on it, and it takes a very nice, fine edge, and holds it well for 1095.

The Mountain Man pattern is not one that appeals to me, but if it did, I would purchase it through a good dealer (such as Cumberland or DLT) without worry. It'll do you proud.

i have a queen mountain man with stag and 1095, from bill at cumberland. i think they may have been a special run for him. my knife is o.k., but not what it should (and could) be for that price. the blade action grinds, even after using reeves teflon lube, and there is blade play. the edge grind is terrible; 24 degrees on one side and about 30 on the other.
if you haven't already done so, buy yourself a steel warrior knife for about $12 to see what incredibly fine fit and finish can be done; and what an incredibly fine blade looks like (stout at the spine almost all the way to the tip, perfect bevel to a thin edge and the best edge grind you'll see). now if queen could produce the mountain man to those standards, then it would be a really nice knife. roland

Lockup is somewhat left to be desired. I have found more blade play than what I am used to or prefer in a lockback in my Queen D2 Mountain Man folders. Although the D2 blades have a semi polished finish, it does discolor easily. Most notably on food stuff. Clean and dry well after such use. Some Flitz brand metal polish will help clean it up quite well. Edge angle is obtuse as already mentioned by some. I' ve put them to a diamond benchstone with some good effort and was able to thin out the edge for real cutting purposes. Queen took care the blade play issue(s) on a prompt basis. But for a quality lockback in this particular suggested retail level, there just shouldn' t be any of these quality control/ inspection issues. Overall, I like the pattern. Good working large single bladed lockback.

many of us report the same recurring problem with Queens: blade play and the worst edge grind on the market. so how does Queen get away with it ? because we keep buying them. well not me anymore. i quit after my 10th, the Queen Mountain Man lockback. of the 50 or so knives i've bought since then, only 2 (both recent Bulldogs), have had a problem, and that too is blade play; so no more Bulldogs too. roland

I have bought a couple of Queens recently (last year or so) and I have noticed the blade play also. I like the D-2 and was thinking of getting a Mt. Man cuz' I really like the pattern but this thread has really put me off for now. I did get this pattern from Russell (yellow Deralin(sp) n' ATS-34 I think) and the F&F was perfect ... did Queen make this for Russell ??? ... Anyone from Queen readn' these posts ... ???

I ordered one from Cumberland, 1095 Rootbeer bone. It had too much blade play. Love the design but sent it back. I seems that this is not uncommon for the limited run MM knives for Cumberland.

The blade action grinds on my 1095 Mountain Man too.Otherwise it's a nice knife. 1095 really takes on a nice patina fast.

Camillus made the yellow delrin knives for me, not Queen.
