i have ordered a Queen RAT cattleman's folder with ram's horn handle. does RAT refer to randall adventure & training ? what does it signify for this knife ?

You have it right, these knives are a Special Factory Order for Randall Adventure Training.

Not sure if it has any special significance other that RAT taping into the traditional slipjoint market.

I've heard nothing but good about these knives, and the Rams Horn looks great!

They are good knives with excellent walk and talk.

Be advised, however, that most (including my own) required quite a bit of work to bring the edges to "sharp".

Interestingly enough, most of the recent Queen's I have purchased with the carved (or amber) stag bone have come with reasonably sharpened blades out of the box. Why the RAT folder was different is anybody's guess.

Mine came with better edges than most of my Queen knives. Not terribly sharp, but better than I was expecting, based on my previous experience with Queen. I also filed down the kick on the sheepsfoot blade so it would sit lower than the clip blade.

A couple friends of mine did the same thing on the kick of the sheepsfoot.

Haven't gotten around to it as yet.

Can anyone comment on the quality of these as compared to Moore Maker?

I'm looking at both this one and a MM #5305 stockman, and each have features I prefer over the other (of course). The quality of the workmanship comes into play, too.

I've lost track of which MM knives are made by who, and for all I know both of these are Queen knives. But as I've found, that company puts different levels of effort into their various brands.

For instance, is the MM moore (heh) likely to have the blades rest at the correct height? It looks like they paid more attention to the tang height, at least from the online pictures I've seen.
