Why does Queen offer such a paultry selection of handle styles for their otherwise excellent line of knives? I have two of the inexpensive, but very good, Queen City knives, trapper and gunstock with Delrin scales and 1095 steel, and two Queen ACSB, beautiful handles IMHO, a straight jack and a gunstock, with D2 steel. The only other two choices they offer in non-exotic materials are Birds Eye Maple, which I think is ugly, and Curley Zebra, which is nice but how about some more bone or stags. Can anyone shed some light on this, and do you know if there is more coming in the near future?

Thanks to all, Bill

If you look a little, you can find some stag 'Northwoods' knives (by Queen, in some of the exact same patterns). I have a large stockman (same as the 'Cattle King' #49) and the 2-blade Folding Hunter (again, exact same pattern as Queen's) in stag, with arrowhead shield (Northwoods' own). I'm pretty sure they've also offered the Mountain Man in stag, and maybe another pattern or two. Same steel, too (D2).

Bill...

Queen traditional only offers one type of handle material each year..for additional choice there is Queen City for delrin/stag and Schatt&Morgan for bone/pearl/stag and abalone ,in steels from 420 and ats 32.

There are also the Moore Maker knives, which I understand are made by Queen Cutlery, at least the higher priced models. Those seem to have some good variation in scales.

Queen seems to change their handle material every 3 to 5 years on their "working set" of knives. Like the ACSB in D-2 that you have. Before that it was Carved Stag Bone like this...

Before that it was Birdseye Maple, Black Cherry & Forest Edge Delrin. They also have a Pearl line, an Abalone line, and Dan Burke knives have higher end scales. There is also a new "signature" line due out soon (but can't remember his name) it was someone I have no knowledge about.
And like has been said there is always the Schatt & Morgan line or the Queen City line. The new Heritage Series will have mostly wood scales with some bone. Between all these different lines of knives they have all the bases covered as far a handle material goes.

Fine scales that WCSB, got a Dogleg Jack and Utility in it. Been after a Copperhead or Liner lock in it for a long time. Queen doesn't release all of its patterns in a given scale, I believe. Half Congress for example, I've only ever come across in BEM or Stag.

Queen's main lines are finished in one bone or wood every 3-4 years, I think this helps them keep down costs as they are not like CASE with their myriad of collector 'specials' some of which are not always good taste....However, their Queen City Cutlery Co. issue offers 2 types of bone stag and ebony, not bad! They also concentrate their handle options in the Schatt&Morgan range year series and the latest Heritage knives in woods and stag.

I've always assumed it was for cost reasons, but I have no evidence to back that up. Fortunately I have been satisfied with most of their handle offerings.

Perhaps they are interested in excellent knives not a candy store of handle styles?

Actually, I like this approach better than the candy store approach that Case uses. Nothing against Case, but they go overboard on handle materials. They don't handle every pattern in a material, so if you like the handle, you may not find the pattern you want with that handle material. - Ed J
