Queen Whittler can not sharpen with Lansky

I just bought a Queen Whittler. The two small blades are about 1.5 inches long by .25 inches wide. When I sharpen the small blades with the Lansky at 17 degrees the stone hits the aluminum blade holder but not the blade. It work at 20 degrees but I want a sharper edge.

1) are there any fixes for this issue with the Lansky
2) If not does anyone know if the DMT Aligner™ Sharpening Kit will work with small blades at low angles such as 17 or 15 degrees?
3) any other sharpner suggestions

You asked the same question over in the Maintenance forum - I posted my thoughts there.

thx - cpr

Freehand.

THe GATCO will also not handle narrow blades at the shallower angles.

I can use the one I have at 15 degrees with smaller blades. The jaws have been rebeveled with diamond hones over time allowing the hone to pass the clamp.

Mine have also been kind of thinned over time but I still can't clamp a knife like the narrower SAK Classic and sharpen it.

I do not think I would intentionally thin them. It seems that you might loose some clamping power.

FWIW, I just rec'd the newer metal GATCO clamp from the owner of the company whom I've known for several years.

I've sent him a lengthy report but the bottom line is that I like the older version better despite the flex.

As to thinning the jaws, I agree that overdoing it might be an issue. Mine have only been beveled somewhat and not thinned to a great degree.

I don't think I could do a Vic Classic on mine either. Funny, I just gave one I had laying around to my wife the other day.

boris,

This thread is being moved (again) to the "maintenance" forum. Please do not re-post this in the Traditional Forum. The forum it has been moved to is the appropriate area for this discussion.

 The Vic Classic is what, 1" of blade? And the steel is pretty easy to sharpen, too -- relatively soft and thin. I'd freehand one of those on the bottom of a coffee cup before I'd go to the hassle of trying to figure out how to clamp it up in a sharpening system. :D

I have this problem when I'm dealing with narrow paring knives. I just clamp onto the handle (use masking tape or something for protection against scratches/chips). I've never handled a Queen Whittler & I can't tell just by looking at pics if it's possible to clamp the handle in a stable manner. The angles I end up with aren't perfect & uniform, but they're plenty sharp for kitchen grunt work.
