Quench oil - where to buy...

Just curious where those of you who live in Washington state purchase your fast quench oil? I've been surfing the web for a while and not had much luck sourcing it (would prefer local, but shipped is OK) :grumpy: . I see Brownells sells a medium quench, but is backordered. I have some 1095 ordered and don't want to use canola. I appreciate any help...

I think Kelly Cupples sells oil and is in Washington. Maxim Oil out of Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas sells a variety of kinds and will ship.

Best price (including shipping) that I could find on Parks 50 was through Maxim Oil in Texas. That was more than a couple years ago though....

Thanks for the fast responses. I came across Kelly's site and it appears the quench oils are out of stock/no longer available: http://www.hightemptools.com/quenchants.html ...too bad, as that would have been just what I wanted. I was planning on calling Lee at Maxim Oil on Tuesday; as with everything else these days, I'm sure it will be scary expensive to ship  . Is Park #50 still considered the choice of choices?

Call or email Kelly. Email is octihunter AT charter dot net. Just change the appropriate characters. I bought some from him 3 weeks ago.

IIRC, Maxim didn't charge an obscene amount to ship, and it was still totalled less than what Kelly was charging even before shipping (if I'm not mistaken), and considerably so after shipping, but then again, I live in Indiana and shipping within the state would obviously be cheaper.

Now, whether each party still carries either product, or what they now charge, I don't know.

BTW, what do you plan to quench? Yes, P50 is still the standard for 10xx steels and other "water quench" steels. I don't believe there is yet another quench that is as fast or reliable, though I do recall Maxim had their own proprietary quenches that got good reviews, despite being a second or two slower.

Thanks for the update Drew. I plan to quench 1095, though my kiln is still enroute. I will probably run through the heat treat/quench/temper process with (nearly) unworked 1095 bar stock to familiarize myself with the steps, then actually ht some blades...hopefully minimizing errors. I have read nothing but good reviews on P50, so I'm hoping that if I just throw some steel in it, a knife will come out!

I have heard good things about the mcmaster carr fast quench. It was about $100 for 5 gallons shipped. Its not as fast as parks 50 but not hugely behind either. I use it for 1084 and 1075. There was a thread somewhere around here where a guy was using it for 1095 and worked perfect.
