I know its a well worn subject, but id like to know the benefit of upgrading to a commercial quench and where to get it.I seem to remember in a quench discussion someone suggesting a place in Everman,Tx.That is quite close to me,but my search either turns up too much or nothing. My buddy built me a propane forge,so hot is not a problem any more.Im working with Alabama damascus and recently 0-1 which i really like.Ive been quenching with Canola and peanut oil and getting good results, but if i can "step it up a notch"Id like to do that. Thanks

OK,I googled up the place for parks 50 near me.Are the benefits worth the coin? Here's the info. Lee Neves

The benefits are worth it only IF you get everything else right. Parks 50 is a little overkill for O-1, but works very well on your 10XX steels.

I use AAA for O-1, 5160, and a few other "higher" alloy steels.

You can use canola, motor oil, mineral oil, panther juice, or whatever, and it will probably work, but it only costs a little more to go first class and be able to know that you have done everything possible in order to put out the best product that you can.

If you get #50 and AAA you will have a good oil for just about any steel that uses a liquid quench.

OK,Im just doing the very simple steels right now.The o1,damascus,and i want to get some of the 1084 FG.So i really wouldnt see a benefit in a higher quality quench oil?As far as doing everything else right, tell me.These steels im simply taking to a bit beyond non magnetic, quenching in the oil, edge in first, and then dropping them in my water bucket. After a muck cleanup i put them in a toaster oven at 400 for 40 minutes. It seems to be working good.Skate file, sharpens well and all.Only problem so far is i put a crack in one blade. It was some of Richard J's 1084.Its already hard as a freekin diamond tho.Im using it as a shop knife and play toy.It chops 2x4's up pretty good, and the crack hasnt changed a bit.

The 1080 and possibly the damascus would benefit from the Parks 50, which is fast oil. Steels that are engineered for oil-quenching are a little better off with a medium speed oil, like AAA.

Shoot. What am I thinking? I thought #50 was slow and AAA was fast. I was going to pick up some #50 from Maxim in a few weeks when I'm down in Fort Worth.

I have a couple of 5160 blades to HT now. I found some 11 second oil somewhere (Houghton?). I thought that would be close to AAA. Am I thinking totally wrong?

I'm all confused now, which is not as difficult as I'd wish.

Could someone shed a little light on this for me, pretty please?

McMaster carr has quench oil much cheaper and some of the guys on here who were using them were happy with them

Parks # 50 is a very fast oil

Parks AAA is slower 9-11 seconds

You would for sure notice a better quality quench in an actual quench oil. That is what it is made for, not cooking. just my 2 cents
I would recommend a temper of at least 2 hours at temp. If possible i would recommend tempering for 2 hours, let it air cool and give it another 2 hours.

I got some p50 from Lee and he is a great guy to work with. I got it after seeing the research done by Kevin C. A while back comparing quench oils to cooking oils. I am happy with it so far for my 1080 and 1084

Thanks for the tips.:thumbup:I need to do some studying in the stickeys ect..I was perfectly happy grinding premium S.S. and sending them out for h.t.But after getting the forge and seeing some success doing it myself.Well,it's just a blast!:DAnd im not waiting on others to get stuff done,mailed,ect...
