I've been told to use used transmission fluid would anyother oil work or produce less scale?
Peace
Bob

You can use tranny fluid, but it's best to use actual quenching oils. Brownell's Tough Quench is a good one, and there are many others that I can't remember the names of.

I use Texaco type A but, I've also used ATF with good results as well as "Goddard's Goop". I really like the "goop" for edge quenches and still use it on occasion.

Get your hands on some Parks 50 if you can. The tough quench is very popular and easier to get ahold of.

Before I got the parks, I used canola (smells better than atf) or water (not recommended.) :D

Scale is produced when the steel is heated. a reducing atmosphere would reduce that.

I've quenched dozens of 1084 knives in vegetable oil and it works great for me.

As always, a commercial quenchant is the ideal and will provide the best reliablility.

However, I've also had pretty good luck with the "Goddard's Goop" (a mix of paraffin, ATF and lard) and plain ol' veggie oil.
