Quenching oil

Hey Adkwit, any light oil will do fine, try several and you might develope your own preference. Olive oil works great as will most any vegetable oil, or if you prefer a petroleum product, then you can use transmission fluid. You can also buy commercially formulated quenching mediums, but my vote is for the olive oil. Make sure you use a metal container with a lid in case of flash fires. -Guy Thomas

I like olive oil too but it goes sour after a while. I use texaco brand light hydraulic oil . It has a fire retardant in it. Mineral oil from your local ranch and home store is better yet.

Hydraulic fluid is a good quench-oil, but very toxic and canerogene when vapourized or burned. Most synthetic oils are toxic, because none of them were ment to be burned.
Mineral oil is the professional choice, but relatively expensive.
Over here I only use olive oil, for two reasons: 1. it smells good and is not toxic
2. it costs me about $ 3 USD for 5 liter from a local restaurant. And those things come in a tin can! I just cut the top off and voila, your perfect quench bath.
