Query Regarding Etching on Spyderco Techno Blade

Hi All,

I've been frequenting the Bladeforums for quite some time now; but this can be considered as my first real post.

Today I received my Spyderco Techno. Here I noticed a difference in the etching of Spyderco logo and other etchings on the blade as compared to my other Spydies. I could feel the etchings on the blade with finger as they are rough. Also, the color of etching is golden brown. Compared to this, my other Spydies' etching can't be differentiated on the blade as they are smooth. Also, their color is dark grey.

Does Spyderco commonly use different etching types as I mentioned? If it does, please pardon my ignorance.

Regards,

Abhiram

Two possible causes. One is that different makers use different processes to etch the blades, so that could be the reason unless you're comparing two models marked Taichung, Taiwan. The second is that different steels may require different processes, or react differently to the same process. Like the Techno, the Chaparral is made in Taichung, and I compare an S30V Chaparral with a CTS-XHP Chaparral, the markings on both of them look and feel the same to me. Where are your other Spydercos made?

Welcome!
Just to add a little to The Deacons post, there is a thread around here, or on the Spyderco factory forum, with a bunch of pics comparing all the different makers etch styles, and the different tool paths chosen to effect the logos...
(if I can find it, I'll come back and post, but I'm currently mobile, and Search is tedious...)

Hi Deacon,

Appreciate your response. My Spyderco Native is from Golden,Colorado and other Spydies (Manbug, Delica, Dragonfly, Pacific Salt and Jester)are from Seki, Japan.

Techno is my first Spydie from Taichung, Taiwan.

On none of the other spydies I have mentioned above, I can feel the Spyderco logo or other etchings as they are smooth like blade itself. That is why this immediately came to my notice as on Techno it looks like some kind of stamping.

Abhiram

Thanks for the info Matt, I'll search for that thread.

My Techno seems to be the same way and I wondered this before also, the logo is kind of raised.

Here are some examples I found.
Thanks to the original photographer.

Hi Barman,

For my Techno, the logo is similar to the bottom left one in your pic. Thanks for sharing.

Taiwan logo really looks the best, if you ask me.

Agreed. Yet another reason the Taichung models are my favorite! I think it's cool that the Bugs vary. Whether it was an intentional design choice or not, each country having there own slight variation is such a great little detail for collectors.
