hello everyone. i don't have any experience with tool steels, so i figured i would throw this one out for the experts!

is it inevitable that 01 tool steel will get a patina and stain if it is used on a hunting blade? or is it possible that if it's cleaned right away after use on gutting, skinning, boning that it won't get permanently stained?

thanks for the thoughts on that!

It will form a slight patina by the time you get to wipe it down. I have not used it for hunting, but it will stain almost instantly after cutting acidic fruits and such. I think it adds character so its never been a problem for me:)

Yes it is inevitable. However a good finish can greatly prolong this. I have had a few orders for traditional patch knives, and I use O-1 and A-2 because they take to blueing and heat coloring very well and both of these processes are inexpensive and will help fight patina. Keep it clean , lightly oiled and DON'T store it in a leather sheath.

thanks guys for all the responses. you all have been very helpful and it is greatly appreciated :)

If you don't like patina on your knives, use a metal polish such as Flitz, Wenol, Simichrome or even Brasso to remove the patina and polish up your knife really nice.

oh ok - i didn't realize that the patina could be removed. i thought it was a permanent stain. so these polishes will make the steel look like new? if that's the case that's pretty sweet!

Depending on how advanced it is I’ve polished up a blade with tooth paste and my roommates toothbrush.

i love the patina.we used to put acid on new blades in 50s hated the funcky shine.all the new guys ca'nt stand tarnish and that's fine.please remember our ancestors whom depended on their tools to survive made it thru the centuries with tarish.

that's a good point and i agree

if i was getting a rustic/antique style knife i'd definitely want a blade with patina :)
