I recently picked this knife up and had a question about the smaller coping (sheepsfoot?) style blade. Is the blade supposed to be at an angle as in my pic when in the open postion? It seems as though it should open up more in alignment with the handle. The notch is engaging properly and the blade has a strong snap. I have another two blade Silver Knight but with a spear shaped blade and it opens up along the lines of the handle. If anyone else has this model, is this the proper blade position ? Thanks! Dave

Not trying to throw off your thread, but I had a recent Gerber Silver Knight single blade folder, but got rid of it after I found out the steel didn't even have a designation in the catalog. Do you know what the steel is on the older models?

I've got a two blade just like yours and I have another in pearl and they have the same alignment as yours.

Those are usually very nice little knives with great fit and smooth action. I've never seen a blade like that either, but that isn't saying much; they were made for a long time and there could have been some uncommon variations over the years.

As far as the steel, I don't know. I have an AG Russell catalog from 1995 with a Gerber Knight closeout special, and a 2000 catalog with a warehouse find advertisement. Neither ad specifies the steel type. They look stainless to me, still bright and shiny after being in my collection for over ten years.

The angle is odd, but then, so is the fact they have a blade coming out of an end with no bolster. It's not that it's "wrong", just a design decision. I have a Boker Canoe whose blades "don't open all the way", or are less than 180 degrees. It's just how they chose to make it.

I believe that technically that small blade is a real sheepsfoot, whereas the more rounded version that we Americans are more familiar with is traditionally known as a lambsfoot. I've seen a few Sheffield knives with the more angular shape, and they're referred to as sheepsfoot (sheepsfeet?). I could be wrong though; I'm relatively new at this.

Thanks for all the replies. The blade steel is 440C with a Rockwell of 57-59. They are great little knives. I have always carried one in my jeans coin pocket. The sheepsfoot angled as it is is actually perfect for opening boxes and such.

muskrat: thanks for confirming blade alignment...makes me feel better that this was the design.

heres a scan of mine for comparison

the funny thing is, the pearl has a hlaf stop, the wood one does not. I may have to switch the old brown stuff out for some ironwood, koa or bocote though :D

muskrat: thanks for posting the pics!

A.G. : thanks for the steel clarification.
