I have run across a sporterized 8mm German Mauser, it's a WWII model as it has an eagle over a swastika on it. This gun looks brand new and the stocks are beautiful, and best of all it's cheap. My question is does any one know how to tell by any sort of markings whether it is a .318 or a .323 version? I'm hoping its one capable of firing full power European ammo. Thanks.

If it's a WW2 model it's a .323. You won't see any Kar 98's in the earlier caliber. I've never came across one in 30 some years of collecting, in fact.

A much more common problem is too much headspace. If you notice backed out primers, or flowed, bulged primers it's time to park it untill checked with go-no go gauges.

I love Kar 98's., and Mausers of all varieties.

The Germans made the change to .323" in 1905 !
What are the markings ? The three letter code indicates where it was made and the date of course when.

Would love to see a pic.

I have an M48A in pieces that I need to get a sporter stock for.
