I wonder if anyone would help me identify what this material is. Please and thank you.

Is it a custom or is it from a special project?

It almost looks like snakewood to me but I don't know.
 
After market mod, IMHO. If it's heavy it could be stone/agate, if it's reasonably light it could be wood or acrylic.
 
Burl of some sort...?
Sorta hard to tell for sure without seeing it in person.
