Hello Folks,

Recently I have obtained this knife:
http://www.student.kuleuven.ac.be/~m9710483/pendray1.jpg

Specs: 5 inch blade, differentially treathed, nice hardening line. 52100, integral bolster, mirrorfinished. Stacked leather handle, forged on bronze buttcap. slightly convex grind, it isn't totally flat. razorsharp with a fine edge. no sheath.

I can't post pics, sorry for the inconvienience.

Anyway..I tried to figure out it's value, and the best reply I had was
'no Clue' and Bernard Levines 'Ask the maker ho much he would charge for a new one'. I E-mail Alfred pendray, but i didn't got any reply yet, and it has been three weeks already.

Soooooo..just for curiosity..how much would other ABS-mastersmith ask for it?

And how much would you ask to make such a knife, should there be a difference in pricing between ABS-mastersmiths and non-ABS-mastersmith guys?

And should there be a difference, how much would my knife be worth?

greetz & thanks in advance. Bart.

What about US$ 101,00 and a half dozen eyelets for a Concealex sheath, Bart? You can't get a better offer, I assure you!

thanks folks for the replies :p :D

I don't wanna get rid of it, just know it's value.
And if i wanna loose it..it'll only be in a trade (you should know that, Ivan)

greetz, bart.

Ok, I'll raise my offer to a dozen eyelets and a half dozen posts and screws, but that is t'he farthest I'll get!!!

I believe Al Pendray is currently President of the Knifemakers Guild -- or maybe the ABS. He's probably a pretty busy guy.

He also was just in the news for discovering the ancient secret to Wootz damascus. That could be taking up his time. (Or am I mixing him up with someone else? Don't think so, but with my memory, all's possible.)

I'd send him another e-mail, apologize for seeming pushy, and see if you don't get some results.

I don't know that Pendray is one of those whose pieces will go for thousands, regardless of appearance or whatever, but I sure wouldn't let it go very cheap.

You might try asking Les Robertson, or one of the Larrys at Blade Art or Knife Art. Pendray might be selling knives there or at Arizona Knives, or one of the other custom dealers.

Another thing to factor in is that Al Pendray is the guy that introduced 52100 to the bladesmithing community.

52100 is really an unimpressive blade steel, until Pendray came up with a really elaborate heat treat process for it. I think it was something to do with his research into wootz damascus heat treat and how he wanted to make a point about how little people really know about heat treating. On another forum, Howard Clark used to call 52100 Pendray's joke on the knife making world.

Bart,
I bought a stag handled 52100 integral directly from Pendray very, very similar to yours about 5 years ago at the Guild Show and it cost me $250 back then. I saw another about two years ago very similar also at a show and the asking price on it was $450. If I had to guess the value of yours I would say somewhere in the $350 to $500 range.

Why don't you contact Les Robertson or one of the other well known purveyors and ask them to be sure. I could be way off.
