I recently purchased a used Companion billed as "easy opening"; when I recieved this knife there is a cut out on the small blade side that I quess makes this an easy opener. My wife really liked this little knife so I ordered her a new one it does not have the cut out "easy open" feature. Is this something that is found on older 309's or what's the deal? Thanks for you time!

Without seeing the knife I am only guessing, but back when Camillus cutlery produced our 300 series for us, I believe they (or some of them) had a small relief in the handle to access the notch in the blade. When Buck began producing their own 300's the handle shape was modified and the small cutout/relief was not included.

Mr. Bill is right, as you would expect.

I think I remember seeing that knife on a popular auction site, where they used EZ open in big letters in the title.....
They were from the era when black 300s were contracted by Camillus. The EZ open notched from 1974 to 85. No other marks are apparent for you to tell from a frontal photo that there is an notch on top of the back scale. You will have to ask. Finger nic will be a long pull. Tangs will be marked BUCK, 309, U.S.A. I will check my knife pasture but I think I have a weak 309bull and am short on 309s, so most likely can't help you out. 300Bucks

Here' an old photo of most of the 309s, in a general sense....not every date code. The EZ opening is not shown but is on the knife second from the bottom on the left. Missing a stag, new Dymondwood and Cherrywood.

Here's a 309 Leroy R. rescaled in Axis deer, someone had drilled out the pivot pin and put an off brand blade in place of original. Leroy fixed her up and put a fancy scale on it so I could use it as a 'Sunday-go-to-meetin'" EDC.

This little knife has the EZ open feature but I don't hold it out as a mint knife.

I bought it new and it has been a hard working constant "Companion" ever since.
