Hello,

I will ask this here first and look at the BUCK KNIFE website later on.

What BUCK knife would be close to the RANGER SKINNER # 113 fixed blade knife with a WEE bit shorter blade?

My Ranger which I LOVE and CARRY on a DAILY basis has a 3 1/8 inch long blade. My SWEET Ranger came with a nice case too. I carry it in a fanny pack while I work in my yard and everywhere else in town and in the boonies.

Do any of you carry a shorter blade - FIXED blade knife made by Buck than the RANGER knife? This would not be for hunting and only used as a daily carry knife in a fanny pack for me. (I am NOT knocking hunting.)

My Buck Vanguard can be open carried easily if I am within town limits. I usually use that for the woods/wilderness and camping/hiking. I love that knife too.

I was thinking that maybe I should get another BUCK Ranger like I have now too. A back up carry knife since I LOVE the Ranger so much.

But I am seriously debating about a WEE bit shorter blade knife. This has to be a FIXED blade knife for me. ALL of my Buck knives were and are made in the USA including the sweet, three folding Buck knives that I gave to my husband on Sunday evening. He loves what I gave him too.

So I want a Fixed Blade knife like the Ranger Skinner and I want it to be a USA made one.

I thought that I would check out the BUCK ones first since I love the brand and I am happy with them.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Cate
A fixed blade knife lady.

I know this is the Buck forum, so I will send you an email.

For a Buck you might try the 116 if you can find one, or a 102. Also, the Packlite Small and the Omni Drop point have 3 1/4 inch blades. The Alpha Hunter comes in rubber or rosewood handles and has a 3 3/4" blade.

I agree with the mini Alpha Hunter. I wear mine to work every Friday, we have Fixed blade Friday's at work. The blade and handle is smaller than the 113. I haven't used for much of anything yet so I can't speak to the functionality of it, just that it looks good with jeans or Dockers. I know that don't help much.

Cate, it's about the handle as well as the blade. The handle has to be comfortable for the duration of the intended use. I find a small blade works well, but not a small handle (if I'm using the knife for more than a simple cut). I do like the Buck 116 Caper for a short, fixed blade - it's got a decent handle. I like my Buck 102 for cleaning waterfowl, but not for cleaning bigger game - handle too small (for me). OH

I like the blade shape of the 116. It's at 3". The early year dates Buck gave more belly. It can work as a skinner up to like a deer. To me I've wondered about it's shape as a caper. I think for that I'd prefer a 110.
But for other cutting tasks I'd like it. DM

The Buck 113 is at the small end of the Buck fixed blade knife as far as blade size goes. You could look at the Buck Smidgen it's got a small blade and is a fixed blade knife.

With your hand problems, I don't know if something like the Packlite Caper with a skelitonized handle would be a viable choice.
It has a 2 1/2 inch blade and is made in the US.

Good luck in your search, and God Bless.

Thank you.

I am looking at those too. I want to handle some of those knives in person.

This is what I just posted in the Traditional Section about my conversation with Buck:

My husband used his BUCK 55 to cut open a really BIG box this afternoon. He was very pleased with it!

Side note:

I called Buck Knives in Idaho and spoke to a nice lady, S., in the customer service/sales department. She helped answer some of my questions. Most likely (?) I will end up with a BUCK again but I have to check out another BUCK KNIFE in person if I can find it out here.

I may end up with another spare BUCK Ranger Skinner #113 again for the small FB knife. I already know HOW that feels and handles in my hands.

Thanks again, folks!

Cate
