Question about a patina

My RMD always rusts pretty bad after I use it so I was thinking about putting a good patina on it. My question is how well will it hold up against rust once I'm finished. I absolutely love the feel of the RMD and want to use it as my go-to knife for everything but the rust issue is making it hard. Trying to decide if putting a patina on it will solve the issue or if I should just get a Boss Jack LE. I like the feel of the RMD better but I would rather have a rust free knife. Not trying to start a BJ vs RMD debate just wondering on the patina. Thanks for the info!

A quick wipe of Ballistol will prevent the rust. Hey, the knife works like crazy for you, give a little TLC when you're done using it. Of course, patina looks cool & is an oxide "coating". Unless "using" it involves fat, such as dressing a deer, I'd still wipe it down.

Just my little opinion.

Patinas do pretty well at rust prevention. I'm a big fan of the rice vinegar patina--gives it a bluish gray tint that looks very nice.

I do use it for cleaning animals and food prep. I would rather not have to worry about having to wipe it down with something at the end of everyday of using it. Plus it's something extra having to take hiking, hunting etc that I would rather not if I can help it. Thanks for the info guys.

One more question that I was wondering. If I do put a patina on it would it wear off on the edge when I sharpen it? If that's the case then the edge wouldn't be protected anymore so I might as well go with INFI unless it penetrates into the metal.

If you're sharpening regularly and using the knife often, rust will never be a problem. I have dipped my few bare rats in lemon juice, and while they do still get some rust, for the most part it protects them reasonably well. I live in quite a humid climate as well. I think often the issue of rust is quite overexaggerated, even if you do get rust it's as simple as a quick brushing with steel wool, or scrub with flitz or something :)

If I do put a patina on it would it wear off on the edge when I sharpen it?

Yes, a patina is just like rust, it's a chemical reaction taking place only on the exposed surface of the metal. As soon as you sharpen some away, you have exposed a new layer of metal.

Did you remove the coating from your RMD? I was thinking about getting my HRLM stripped and satinized however, rusting was on my mind with the Humid weather we have here. Does anyone have a satin RMD or HRLM and what is your experience with rust? I maintain my knives with mineral oil and have had no rust on the edges thus far.

Hey, check out the new thread by jawkDNA on the General Knife Discussion. He just did a forced patina - but on 1095CroVan

I haven't removed the coating yet, still deciding on whether to do it or not. Any possibility of an INFI RMD soon?! Kenash- I'll check out that thread Thanks for the info.

A INFI RMD is worthy of a death chat!
If you haven't stripped your knife rust on the edge shouldn't be much of an issue. A quick wipe will take care of it and the rest will sharpen off.

Look at norcalblacktail's half satin RMD thread. He does some amazing work.

Infi RMD. Ohh yeaa . Death Chant worthy.
a INFIDU? with choil or no choil option.

Thanks for all the info guys! If I do attempt a patina I'll post some pics. I think an INFI RMD would be my ideal knife!
