Question about an Otter Messer 3 rivet folder

Hey gang

Hoping someone familiar w/ these can help.

I just received an Otter Messer 3 rivet. I know these knives are produced in carbon and stainless. I requested a carbon steel model, and expected there to be a "carbon" etch on the blade signifying. There is not.

Does this mean this example is of SS, instead of the carbon steel? I do not want to test w/ an acidic to check, as I might be returning this to the distributor.

Any insight would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Maybe the "*" under "Solingen" indicates the steel type?

Most stainless German knives I've seen have "Rostfrei" on the blade.

The Otters that I have come across that are carbon is just like yours or will also have a blade etch....the stainless versions will have the “rostfrei” stamped above Soligen eliminating the word. Germany.
the * will appear on both versions

Thanks for the reply

I did think the asterisk indicated ss as well....as Ive seen other manufactures use something similar. But I did find another/different model OM w/ the * and a "Carbon" etch on the blade..

Thank you very much. That's what i was looking for..just wanting to confirm that carbon steel examples do not always have the etch..

Most appreciated.

I love this place

The first picture I found looks exactly like yours. The steel is described as C75/4034, so at least the seller believes it is carbon.

Congrats on the Otter knife. Great looking knife! They make some fantastic knives. I have two of their anchor knives. Hands down my favorite traditional knife. That grenadila wood handle is very durable.

Thanks!

I'm very impressed w/ this. The F+F on this example is on par with GEC's 71's..Tight tolerance, solid lock up/zero play, centered blade, flush springs in open/closed...yea, I'm lamenting a little.

I was aware of and in search of the anchor knife..found this, don't know how I've never heard of these. ...did light research/youtube and had to have...it doesn't disappoint. It looks like the bolsters are integral w/ the liners...really cool...bolsters are thick blocks beautifully..dished?, scalloped?..fluted?.. machined. And the wood is great..pins well done, transitions good and I love tbe brass on this. Nice thin grind w/ satin finish..I'm gonna have this little laser of a tank for a long time. famous last words.

At $50+/- ?. What a great value..I'll be getting more, along w/ an anchor knife or two.

Thanks 5K Qs 5K Qs

I'm very happy w/ it. I stated that the F+F was on par w/ the GEC 71...it is not. Not on this one, anyway.

Some awful pics of a side by side:

The 3 rivet is bigger, longer..longer, broader blade. The perspective is off in the pic, the 71 is bigger in comparison than it looks..still being the smaller knife.

Some small gaps, and less finely machined finish on parts. Also realized that the bolster and liners are not one piece..had that wrong as well.

71 has slightly thicker liners w/ the thicker blade stock going to the Otter, but w/ a slightly thinner grind. No experience w/ C75 steel.

Great knife. Won't be kicking my 71's out, certainly not the 01user. But, different enough to justify both. (like I need an excuse to buy another knife). Both have great ergos and it nice that the Otter has a stainless option.

I have the same knife with the same markings and it is definitely not stainless. A local tool store carries Otter Messer and I never go there unless I'm willing to have another Otter follow me home.

Would you know if the liners are stainless?

Local shop that carries Otter-Messer? Yea, I'd try to avoid that too...keep it down to 4 a month:)

Okay I've seen enough of these Otter knives to be interested. Perhaps someone could recommend a place where I might buy one? Are they any Forum affiliated places where I can get one like the ones above or the one with a anchor on it?

Otter Messer says the bolsters and liners are stainless (Edelstahl). I have seen some rust on the liners of my Anker Messer, but it's been a regular work knife with lots of pocket time. My Drei Nieten Messer is more of a Sunday-go-to-meetin' knife.

I recently got a small Otter Hippekniep (sodbuster) and it was advertised as carbon steel. The blade is definitely stainless, it does not react to cold blue. The liners and backspring are carbon.

I read that as well. The rep/owner of the shop I purchased from said that they werent always marked consistent w/ etching or stamps.

I almost just ordered one of these. Do you have pics? Rostfrei tang stamp?

Better size comparison of the 71 to the 3 rivet
