Question about anodizing

I recently got a kizer envoy that I am anodizing. The pocket clip and backspacer came out great but I'm worried about the lockside scale. I can't seem to get the steel lock bar insert out of the knife. Just to double check, I HAVE to remove that before trying to anodize, correct?

Also, the ball for the detent is part of the titanium scale and not on the lock bar insert. Should I worry about anodizing over that ball and cover it up with nail polish or anything?

Thanks!

It will not hurt the detent ball at all.

I have noticed with anodizing, at least using the 9v battery trick, that more mass gives a different shade of the color. Meaning, my clips and back spacers always come out way darker than my scales do.

Post the results!

If it is not a ceramic detent ball it WILL harm it. You might get away with it if you're just monkeying around with 9v batteries , but with a real power supply you WILL etch the ball. Same goes for the lockbar insert, and that much steel may contaminate the anodizing process.

The reason you get different colors depending on surface area (with 9v batteries) is because they can't supply enough current to keep the voltage up on a larger piece.

Thanks for the response.

Do you have a method you use to remove the detent ball and then replace it afterwards? I always assume they were pressed in and not able to removed without damaging the frame.

I always just masked it off during anodizing, either tape or enamel :).
