Hello

I have a few questions to ask you all. I have never made any thing like this before but, I have been interested in it since I was a kid. My question is how can I get started in this? I live in a apartment so is it even possible? If so what do I need to get started and can any of you recommend some reading?
I appreciate any help.

You're going about this the right way by reading as much as you can first.
Many want everyone else to read, then answer their questions. ;)
Nothing wrong with questions, but read all you can to get a good foundation, then ask all the questions you need to.

The best book IMO, is "How To Make Knives" by Richard Barney, and Robert Loveless.
You can find good prices on it at www.amazon.com .
It describes several ways to make a knife, including by filing. It also covers several methods of sheath construction.

Good luck to you.:D

I agree with reading everthing you can first. I also recommend "How To Make Knives" along with " The $50.00 Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard and any of Ed Fowler's books. IMO, I think Ed is a gifted writer. You'll not only learn, you'll also be entertained as Mr. Fowler has a way with words :D Wayne's book is down to earth without alot of difficult terms and methods. I read all these books and it helped immensely. Hands on help is also good if you have a local maker within driving distance. Once you smell that hot steel and see a knife come to life, you'll be hooked! I know I am, it's all I think about any more :D

Verbel, reading the books mentioned are priceless and great books to learn from. I don't know what part of Georgia you are from but Pops Knives and Supplies in Washington, GA. has a once a year knifemakers demonstration with about 5 different makers showing different aspects of how to do's.A great question and answer place to be. Pop does have a charge to get in, usually around 50.00 but he feeds you too. Good deal. I don't know when the next one will be but give him a call if you want to make sure when and get your name on the list. Just an idea. Cavelady

I would love to go to a knife making demonstration. Unfortunetly I no longer live in Ga I recently got assigned to Scott AFB so I live in IL now.

I started making knives back in 1982, after making a few and liking it, I decided I would get a book and learn how. The book was Step-by-Step Knifemaking by David Boye, a wonderful book and highly recomended. :D

The tutorial posted by Ripper is a great place to start. I'm working through my first using it as a guide and think you'll be surprised at what you can accomplish with those simple tools. The David Boye book is recommended also.
