Question about Benchmade warranty.

I have a Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage, it is by far my most beloved knife I own. Today I noticed that the axis lock was sticking open. after taking the scale off to figure out if there was debris causing it I discovered that one of the axis lock springs was broken. As soon as I got home I called Benchmade to see if they could mail me a replacement spring, they told me I had to mail it in for repair. After reading the warranty info I see that I was not suppose to disassemble the knife. But I fail to see how you can properly clean and lubricate a knife if you don't open it. Will Benchmade honor the warranty if it has been opened?

Thanks,
Alex

Will they know you opened it if you don't mention it? I think the spirit of that clause is to cover Benchmade from fixing problems that were directly caused by morons taking apart and breaking their knives (don't ask me how). I would put it back together and return it with a note that the spring appears to be broken.

The key to properly clean and maintain any manual folder is simple:
1. Wash the knife in warm soapy water, with Dawn dish soap preferably because it cuts through oil and grease.
2. Open and close the knife several times while submerged in the soapy water (carefully). Use a toothbrush to scrub G10, etc.
3. Rinse the knife with cool clean water, make sure you rinse it thoroughly and completely.
4. Use canned air (keyboard duster) to blow out any excess water. Especially in the pivot or lock mechanism.
5. Oil/lube pivot area as you normally would.

With Benchmade, part of the warranty is defects against materials and craftsmanship. The craftsmanship aspect refers to the way in which the knife is assembled. Sure we get some with off centered blades and an occassional lemon makes it through QC. But it is what it is. They will fix your knife, but you might have to pay whatever it is they carge to repair and fully inspect the knife. Knife companies can tell when you disassemble their knives.

They should fix it as long as it is put back together correctly. It is just their policy not to send out new springs. You may have to send in your knife but they will take care of you and make things right.
