There is a small seb for sale that i am interested in buying. The seller does not have the birthday card. It has B 98 stamped inside and a purchase dat or 2001. Does this make it a BG-42 or S30V?

I think the b stands for the second third of the year

A=jan, feb, mar, apr
B=may, jun, jul, aug
C=sep, oct, nov, dec

i got a seb that has a "00" on the scales and the b- day card says 2001

I think the scales are made in 98 and was assembled and left the shop at 2001, OR it was made in 98 and bought in 2001.
did the person you're buying from bought from chris reeve or was it a distributor? if it was a distributor then it was probably in stock for a while before it was purchased. but without a b day card It can be anyone's guess.

I think someone at CRK has posted that the handle dates indicate only the date for the handles. The knife could have been made later - and then sold much, much later, if it sat on a shelf at a dealer's place. Look at all the absolutely new Regulars and Classics still in dealer stock - so the purchase date is the least useful of the possible data points.

It was sold in 2001. So that still makes it BG-42 , correct?

Just a comment thats a bit off topic about what Jnewell made about products

being on dealers shelves for a while before they are sold.

I bought a Ruger 41 magnum revoler in 6/97.I took the grips off to check

something ..I recognized numbers on the grip frame.I called Ruger...the

gun was test fired in APRIL 1980. 17 years on a dealers shelf.

it was bought in 01, the the transitional period is in 02, so no matter what it's STILL is bg-42...unless the guy switched the blades then it will have an S on the blade.

Can't fire it now, its a collectors piece :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

The blade should be BG42 unless it's been changed out in the aftermarket. The handles were the second batch ( "B") made in 1998. The knife was probably assembled within 12-18 months after the handles were made, and may have spent some time on a dealer's shelf after that.

Let me know if you decide to pass on the knife:D
