Received my first Busse. A Battle Mistress with the black coating. Looks great but I can already tell with a few sessions in the woods it will look like crap. Can you get a new knife without any coating other than paying a premium for satin finish?

No. Because the coated knives do not get the degree of finishing that DCBB or satin knives do...that's why coated is cheaper. So a lot of us will strip the finish, either immediately or after it starts to look like hell.

Thanks for the replies. How difficult is it to strip?

Unbelievably easy. I don't do it myself, but I've seen a ton of posts describing how everyone from Tyrkon to ResinGuy have easily and successfully stripped the coatings ... without bothering the handles at all.

Just hang in a bit and someone will post a description for you.

there are members here that do professional work, but many are too busy to do so. Your first bet would be to call the Busse Shop. They are the pros, and any work they do will keep your warranty intact. Stripping won't void the warranty, but having some one use power tools to refinish the blade or grind on it will.

I stripped my SS. It was super easy. The instructions said to leave the stripper on for 15 minutes if I remember correctly. That was way too long. It took the finish off almost instantly, but I had some on the handle, which took the shine and color out of the pumpkin handle.

I will be stripping my Ash next.

Stripping a Busse blade is much easier than you would think. First take a good paint stripper such as this..

Soak the knife in the paint stripper bath..

The coating will bubble off in a few minutes...

That's awesome! Thanks for the pics. Does anyone have pics of a stripped NMSFNO? I think I may want to do that with mine and polish it up.

I thought the same thing. I used some "break free" and a green kitchen scrubber and it cleaned up well. But, I don't abuse my knives like some of the hogs here so you may want to end up stripping it.
