Question About Boxes Cuz I'm Lazy

So, I was wondering:

Does the date on the Buck box (example: my 102BR box HAD a box date of 10/31/05) relate to the date of actual knife manufacture or is it the date it was shipped, or something else?

Would it be possible to find a box dated, let's say, 01/05/06 that had a *"Knock Knock" tang stamp on it?

Too lazy to go through my boxes and see the odds of it...

"Knock, Knock"
"Who's there?"
"Ida."
"'Ida' who?"
"I da ho."

  ...Not sure how well or how close you can use a box to date a knife goose...I have a NIB 112 with the very pale light yellow box marked CAT.#394 and all the correct paperwork and coupons and stuff that all have dates on them of 1987 but the knife has a 1986 stamp. That doesn't mean that the store I got it from didn't put a different knife in that box but why would they "sub" an 86 knife for an 87??? Likewise I have a NIB 112 FG with a box dated 08/16/04 yet the knife has a "T" stamp on it...Go figure huh??...  ...sooooooo...if ya have an 87 112 lyin' around that needs a home...LET ME KNOW...LMAO...

Hi Goose,

I have a 119 that was custom for the Houston NRA convention last April. Convention was 15,16, 17 or maybe 16 17 18th. whatever Friday, Saturday, Sunday was.

Buck brought 100 of them and the story goes that they almost didn't get completed in time and had to be over nighted to get there on time.

Date on the Box is 4/12/05

So, I would say box date would be pretty close to mfg date. Least for the customs.
Thats my story and I'm stikin to it.

I posted a pic of that one somewhere in these threads..

I know someone else could step in and give us a more definitive answer, but from what I remember of previous conversations.... the box "should" be pretty close to the year the knife was manufactured. Now there are a few points to make the exception to the rule - one of them being that there have been occasions when the assemebly line has ran out of parts - ie blades - for the product being assembled. The line, rather than shutting down, has then used blades from the next batch, which could be marked for the next year. I would imagine this occuring more towards the end of the production year and I wonder how far in advance of the calendar year does the factory start producing knives, if at all.

Did any of that makes sense?

...I tend to agree with you Gypsy...as the ones I have that do differ as to box and knife dates don't differ more than a year or possibly less...

Thanks Darryl, Larry, and Larry...opps, mean "Dan"...

What does the box date signify?
Why is the sky blue?
Why am I addicted?
I should be sending my money to some hungry kid in the third world and get a letter and pic once a year...but, no, I'm here.

I have two Idaho-stamped 119 Specials with both boxes labeled 11/23/04.

Buck produced some Idaho-stamped models in El Cajon, CA to make up for the time that their manufacturing was shut down due to their move to Idaho. Couldn't let down their customers or retailers by having a shortage, I guess.

My 301 is stamped 2004 with a box sticker of March 2005. My assumption is that there were still some 2004 stamped 301 master blades and they used that. So the date on the box may be the more accurate date... the knife built in 2005 with a 2004 master blade.
