I am new to this forum and am interested in the Buck Skinning knife.
Can anyone tell me what they think about the 103? The only one I have seen is the phenolic handle version. I was not aware there was any other options until I started reading this forum. Where do you find those? Is it difficult to switch handles if I purchase a phenolic one? Does the tang go all the way to the pommel? Any help would be appreciated.

gun_dog ....

I got a plain 103 back in November to skin deer with and it
rides in my consol in the truck.I am sure others will let
you know more about them.Welcome to the buck forum.

Welcome to the Buck forum!!
The 103 is great in my opinion! It can be had with different wood handles, brass pommel and fingerguard, aluminum pommel and fingerguard, etc, etc. there are also many steels used in the blades over the years. The best place to look for the rare ones would be knife shows or online auctions maybe? post a want add on BF? They only make the phenolic handled version now the rest are discontinued. I love mine, my dad also loves his, he is going to buy another one to use!
Buck will do a custom handle if you send it in to them along with a nice check :D LOL... It is hard to remove the old handle from what I hear but you could try I guess. The handles are epoxied on... The tang goes almost to the end of the pommel it is cross pinned in the end. Good luck we look forward to your comments when you buy one ;)

Heres a picture of the construction of the buck knives, this is a 119 special.

There are a few 103 limited editions that can be found on ebay. One has stag handles and another has a chip flint style blade and water Buff handle with a white Bison inlayed in the handle; as well as the wood handle version's wh4f mentioned above.

Welcome to Bladeforums.com gun_dog!!! :D Please take a moment or two to visit our benefactors, Buck Knives http://www.buckknives.com/ and One Stop Knife Shop http://www.onestopknifeshop.com/ (Kevin owns this Forum!) ;)

Buck has a very interesting Virtual Plant Tour at http://www.buckknives.com/plant_tour.php , a guide to Tang Stamp Codes at http://www.buckknives.com/collectors_vintage.php , you can also order a Custom-Built Buck Knive at http://www.buckknives.com/custom_knife_shoppe.php , and there is a brief introduction to the Buck Collectors Club at http://www.buckknives.com/collectors_club.php . OK, now that the commercial is over...

Check Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabelas, A.G. Russell, and just about any *big* sporting goods distributor; they often commission "special edition" knives that Buck has officially discontinued but will produce for their volume customers. Quite often in premium steels, and with optional grips/scales.
