Is it true that Buck 119 that is sold at Wal-Mart is different than ones that are bought from new graham knife or from Buck directly (like made in China or something)?

Are Case knives any good anymore? Long time ago I knew folks that liked them but that was before all the brands that are out now. Can a case be a good collector's knife?

Thank you.

I will share what I think I know, but could be wrong about Buck. To my knowledge the difference in the knife itself is notheing. But the ones from Wal mart have a nylon sheath. From most other places have a leather sheath.

As for Case, I have about 30 of them. Love them. And they are very collectable, but not all of them. I think the normal stocked items are not. But they do a lot of special runs that are. Their quility has improved over the past couple of years. I would highly recommend a case knife. My favorite is a Canoe. Then comes Copperhead and peanut. But there are lots of patterns to choose from.

I hope this helps.

Nope. The 119 and 110 sold at Walmart are identical to a knife you'd get anywhere else. Most of the Bucks that Walmart sells come with a cordura sheath instead of leather these days (I did buy a 2005 stamped 110 at Walmart that came with a leather sheath though).

They're all made in Idaho. The reason they can sell so much cheaper is because they can afford to buy in volumes that smaller dealers can't. It's taken me a long time to admit this, but Walmart really isn't a bad place to buy knives... especially in the last several years (Spyderco Native, the new Kershaws, etc.).

I took my case stockman camping last year, and whittled with that thing for hours everyday. And by whittled, I mean taking huge chunks out of 2" sticks, holding onto the handle as hard as I could, pushing through, practically abusing the knife really. Its still around with no bladeplay. Case still makes great knives. I have however noticed personally that carbon steel blade case knives have better walk, talk, and finish than the stainless versions. I dont know if its just my unlucky selection, just something ive noticed...

The same issue (question) popped up on a shooting forum I'm a member of. Someone heard that WalMart can sell their rifles cheaper than most anyone else because the Mfrs send them seconds. Untrue. Same with the knives.

While WalMart sells alot of Chinese made goods, I've never seen or heard (legitimately) of them selling take-offs. Despite the hate that some would impart to them, know that WalMart doesnt deal in fraud.

From what I've heard, Case knives are improving in quality in recent few decades. A recent one I picked up had no blade-play and has great walk and talk. Many collect the limited editions, but they're still excellent users. Give a sodbuster a shot if you're curious.

A little bit off topic but i think some people forget what wal-mart started out as... not the store we know it to be today. Now it's viewed as a "cheap, poor" store.
