Question about Buck Custom Knives

I don't know about the very early days of the Custom Shoppe.....but today I don't see much for numbers.
Seems to me that Buck Customs are NOT numbered and even the "Limited Editions" are not numbered in any meaningful way.
The "serial numbers" people talk about are not really serial numbers, but just numbered "Limited Editions" (which, strictly speaking, are not Buck Customs in the usual sense of the word).
Even these are numbered XXX of XXX, and it seems that the top number is often not reached.
