Question about Buck knife I got as a gift.

Hello, I got a very nice Buck 301 as gift a few years ago. It was reworked by Blue Mountain Turquois. The scales are beautiful and the knife is very smooth in it's blade action. I was wondering how much this knife was reworked. I don't have much experience with Buck knives, I prefer carbon steel blades as a rule so I avoided Buck for that reason alone. Is it the same steel and heat treat as an off the shelf 301 or was there upgrades? Was the action of the blades smoothed out, or was this just a stock 301 that they put fancy scales on? Did Blue Mountain fine tune the fit and finish? Can I find out what kind of steel it is? Buck switched steels at some point in the last couple years didn't they? I love the knife and break it out once in a while for carry, but I'd like to know more about it.

If you can tell us what is on the tang of the main blade we should be able to tell you quite a bit about the knife.

Sorry, I was away from computers for a while. The tang of the Clip blade is marked BUCK with 301 under it. Next to the the 301 is backwards c, or more like a wide U tuned on it's side. It is not as prominantly stamped as the other markings. Under all of that is U. S. A. Above the tang on the blade itself, between the nail nick and the tang is the Blue Mountain Turquois logo.

The backwards "C" is the year stamp for 1996. If your blade is made from the same material as the 110's of that year, it is a 440HC high carbon steel. Anyone else know for sure?

BaronDaddy is right. Aside from the Blue Mountain Logo and scales this sounds like a standard, Buck made, 301. I have a bunch of stock Buck made 300s and they are all really nice. Blue Mountain wouldn't have needed to fool with the knife at all beyond putting new scales on. I have a Santa Fe Stoneworks 309 that is like this.

Just to clarify for what in Mexico we call "error de dedo" ("finger error"), the standard steel would be 420HC stainless.
