Question about buffalo horn scales

My favorite traditional EDC is my GEC #25 Barlow in buffalo horn. Maybe it is my imagination, but it seems like the appearance of the horn is changing over time, and for the better. The grain and the subtle variations in color seem to be standing out more than when new. Can this actually happen, or am I just losing my mind?

You're not crazy or at least not hallucinating. :) Buffalo horn will change, usually for the better, over time. I've got a khukri with horn handle and it has so much more color than when I bought it. I've also seen horn handles shrink or expand in extreme conditions.
Enjoy your Barlow I'm sure it will be a great edc for years to come.

Well at any rate, it is looking better than when new, about four years ago. When I first got it, I remember thinking "nice knife, but the scales are rather plain."

Hi,

I don't think the buff scales on my #25 have changed too much since I got it a couple years ago. But I don't carry it all that regularly either. So perhaps it hasn't aged quite like a more well used one.
