Hey fellas, I have a dumb question for you guys. I have a Sony Vaio that can play blu-ray, and I know it is able to burn dvd's. The only thing is, I don't know if i can burn regular ones or if they have to be blu ray. Any help would be appreciated!

(P.S. the movie is Seven Pounds...its a good flick)

ETA: the model number is VGN-NW270F

You should be fine to use a regular DVD. Look at the drive, if there is a icon that says "DVD multi recorder" you're golden.

That model Vaio has a BD Combo drive, it will play Blu-Ray disks, but only burns DvDs/CDs. you would use standard DvD-R or DvD+R disks for burning.

Well I finally got around to copying the dvd's to the computer and then back onto a blank dvd+r...but when I put them in the computer it doesnt recognize it. Is there anything I can do? And they will still work in a regular dvd player right?

Your computer should be able to play the DVDs you burned. It could be that there isn't any DVD player software on your computer. Download VLC and install. It should play your discs.

Most DVD recorders require that the new DVD be "closed" or "finalized" as the last step to the recording process. This "finalization" step is required in most cases for the DVD to play in standard DVD players.

Good tip -- this sounds like a likely culprit.

Shoot! I opted not to do that lol. I actually didnt even see it until about the fourth disc. Can I put them back in and finalize them?

Yes, normally you can put them back in to finalize them. I've needed to do the same on occasion.

have you guys used the software windows already had installed to burn a movie? I downloaded two movies and trying putting them on the dvd using dvdfab but when I chose what file to download from it would never "stick" (i.e. it just said please select a file blah blah blah..) so i am giving this a try. It is burning, whether or not it actually works we will see.

I have the one movie on blu ray but think it would be too hard to burn a blu ray movie and put it on a regular dvd. more people need blu ray players!

The player matters too. I've burned a copy of a DVD for a couple friends, having tested it first in my DVD player. It works fine on mine, "sorta" works on one friend's (the menu doesn't display, it gives him 5 things to select, each playing a part of the movie before he has to select the next), and doesn't work at all on the other friend's.
